Richardson Claims First Place

Lock Haven, Pa. - The Indiana Hoosiers wrestling team earned a third-place finish at the Mat Town Invitational in Lock Haven, Pa., Saturday, night at the Thomas Fieldhouse. The Big Ten conference took the top three spots, as seventh-ranked Minnesota won the team title followed by 16th-ranked Penn State. Junior and 20th-ranked Brady Richardson earned first place at 174 pounds.
Overall the Hoosiers placed 11 wrestlers in the top-eight of their respective weight classes.
The Vincennes, Ind. native defeated Daniel Walters of American University, 5-3 to claim first place. He opened the invite with a 14-5 major decision over Alex Maciag of North Carolina. He followed with a 2-1 victory over Ed Willis of Ohio. In the semifinals, he defeated Sean Jenkins of Rider, 3-2.
"Brady wrestled well today," Head Coach Duane Goldman said. " He was in a hard weight class and won his first collegiate championship. Hopefully, by winning this tournament it will act as a confidence builder for him."
At 125 pounds, All-American and sixth-ranked Joe Dubuque wrestled for the first time this season and finished second after dropping the championship match to ninth-ranked Bobbe Lowe of Minnesota, 4-2.
At 141 pounds, senior and 14th-ranked Mike Simpson finished second after falling to ninth-ranked Ron Tarquinio of Pittsburgh, 3-1 in the championship match.
In one of the most exciting matches of the invitational senior heavyweight Pat DeGain fell to second-ranked Cole Konrad of Minnesota, 5-3 in overtime. DeGain held a one-point lead at the end of regulation but Konrad had accumulated over a minute of riding time to earn the bonus point and sent the match into the extra frame.
In the extra frame, Konrad scored an early takedown to take the match and the championship.
Sophomore David Herman finished seventh at the heavyweight position.
At 184 pounds, junior Andy Rios finished third, while redshirt freshman Justin Curran took home sixth.
Redshirt freshmen Brandon Becker and Max Dean finished fourth and fifth respectively at 157 pounds. Fellow redshirt freshman Tim Scarl earned a seventh-place finish at 165 pounds.
Redshirt freshman Brian Dyer and sophomore Josh Buuck earned an eighth-place finish at 133 and 197 pounds, respectively.
"We wrestled really good today," Goldman said. "It was a tough invitational with excellent competition and we competed hard. Minnesota and Penn State are really good team and we finished ahead a strong programs. Overall it was a good day."
The Hoosiers return to action on Sunday, Dec. 12, when they travel to Charleston, Ill. for the first dual match of the season against Eastern Illinois University beginning at 1 p.m.
