Road Trip to Arkansas Up Next (11-30-04)

Indiana (2-1) will face Arkansas (4-1) in its second road trip of the season in Fayetteville, Ark., on Wednesday, Dec. 1. Tip-off set for 8 p.m. (EST).
This will be the fourth meeting between the two teams with Arkansas holding a 2-1 edge over the Hoosiers. The last meeting was during the 2003-04 season with the Lady Backs coming away with the win, 78-70.
IU claimed its home tournament title, the Hampton Inn Classic, this past weekend with a win over Belmont, 56-36 and Central Michigan, 42-32.
Cyndi Valentin and Jamie Gathing were both selected to the all-tournament team with Gathing garnering the MVP honor.
ON THE AIR
The game will be broadcast on 105.1 WHCC Radio Bloomington with Jeremy Gray calling all the action. Due to the Indiana men's game vs. North Carolina, at 9:00 p.m. on Dec. 1, the IU women's game will be aired on tape-delayed basis only immediately following the men's game.
The game will also be available via Arkansas' website, www.ladybacks.com by free audio stream or on pay-per-view for $4.95.

DEJA VU
The 2004-05 IU women's basketball team will look almost identical to last season's squad as it returns 11 members, including four starters from 2003-04. The Hoosiers welcome two new faces to the mix in Nikki Smith, a 5-9 guard from Sylvania, Ohio, and Kelli Agness, a 5-4 walk-on guard from Indianapolis, Ind.
HOOSIERS SCHEDULE SIXTH IN SUMMERVILLE RPI POLL
According to the 2004-05 preseason Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WCBCA) Summerville RPI Poll, which measures strength of schedule, Indiana ranks sixth in the nation in overall schedule. In the conference schedule, the Hoosiers are ranked 26th. Here is a look at where Indiana ranks:
LAST TIME OUT
Junior guard Cyndi Valentin's 19-point effort helped lift the Indiana women's basketball team over Central Michigan, 42-32, to claim the Hampton Inn Classic Title on Sunday, Nov. 28 at Assembly Hall.
The Hoosiers and the Chippewas had an extremely hard time finding their offensive rhythm in the first half. With the scoreboard showing 10-5, in Central Michigan's favor after Lindy Hatfield sank a jumper in the paint at the 14:09 mark, the next seven minutes would be a scoreless drought for both teams. It wasn't until the clock showed 7:49 when Indiana's Carrie Smith finally broke the barrier of the offensive struggle with a bucket on an assist from freshman guard Nikki Smith.
A late steal by Valentin minutes before halftime allowed her to score a lay-up on a fast break and put the Hoosiers in double-digits for the first time all game. Indiana had a hard time taking care of the ball as it committed 10 turnovers in the first half of action. IU and CMU were a combined 10-46 in the first 20 minutes of play. Central Michigan led at the break, 14-11.
Valentin then put the game in her own hands and got things started for IU as she scored 11-straight points in a five-minute span to put the Hoosiers up eight, 28-20.
During the next few possessions, the Chippewas tested the Indiana defense and brought the game to within four, 38-32, but four consecutive free throws by senior captain and Hampton Inn Classic MVP Jamie Gathing would ensure the Indiana victory.
Casey Manning led the Chippewas in scoring with 10 points. Gathing was key in IU's victory as well, contributing eight points and five rebounds. Valentin scored 15 of her 19 points in the second half.
DYNAMIC DEFENSE
Indiana's stifling defense has put them first in two categories among Big Ten Conference teams: scoring defense and three-point field goal percent defense. The Hoosiers defense has only allowed opponents to score an average of 39.3 points per game. In addition, over the course of three games, IU has only allowed opponents to make and average of .182 percent from behind the arc with a 6-of-33 shooting effort.
Blocks are another strong point for the Cream and Crimson as they rank second in the conference with 7.00 blocks per game.
GATHING GEARED UP
After sitting out the 2000-01 and 2003-04 seasons due to medical redshirts, Indiana senior Jamie Gathing received her sixth year of eligibility from the NCAA office this past summer and is back back in action for the Hoosiers for the 2004-05 season.
Gathing has gotten the starting nod in all three of IU's games and currently averages 5.0 ppg and 5.7 rpg. She was also named to the Hampton Inn Classic All-Tournament Team and garner the tournament MVP honor.
A 6-0 forward from Kankakee, Ill., Gathing was a member of the Big Ten Foreign All-Star Tour. The tour took place in Australia and the All-Stars finished with a perfect 4-0 record. Gathing averaged 5.3 PP and 4.5 rpg while with the All-Stars.
Gathing averaged 7.7 PP in Indiana's final three games during her junior year. In her sophomore campaign, she contributed with an excellent defensive effort in the Hoosiers' win over Penn State in the championship game of the Big Ten Tournament. Her career-high 12 points came against Western Kentucky in only 17 minutes of action on November 17, 2001. She grabbed a career-high nine rebounds against the same opponent two years prior on November 19, 1999.
MAGNIFICANT McKAY NEEDED
If the Hoosiers can get a repeat performance from last year's match-up with Arkansas from sophomore center Sarah McKay, IU should be in good shape.
During last year's contest, McKay was unstoppable as she came off the bench contribute 18 points on a nine-of-eleven shooting effort from the field.
AGNESS FIRST WALK-ON
Freshman guard Kelli Agness is the first Hoosier walk-on ever in the Kathi Bennett era.
Agness, who earned All-County and All-Conference honors, led North Central High School to a state title during her senior year. She was a McDonald's All-American nominee and also played four years of varsity soccer, earning All-County, All-State and Academic All-American accolades.
NEARING A MILESTONE
With just 12 more wins this season, head coach Kathi Bennett can earn her 300th-career win. The fifth year head coach at IU has compiled a record of 64-58 while in Bloomington. Here is a look and how her wins have added up over the 16 years as a head coach:

BEEN AROUND THE WORLD
Several Hoosiers ventured out of the U.S. this past summer and gained some international playing experience.
Junior Cyndi Valentin represented the Puerto Rican National team that finished second overall in the second round of the CBC Championships, qualifying them for the 2005 FIBA World Games. Valentin netted a game-high 22 points at the CBC Championships in a 72-53 loss to Cuba.
Sophomore Sarah McKay represented the Canadian Senior Women's National Team after a productive showing at the team's open tryout held in Richmond, British Columbia.
McKay competed in a series of four exhibition games against the Japanese National Team from June 4-8.
Head coach Kathi Bennett, All-Big Ten honoree Jenny DeMuth, sixth-year senior forward Jamie Gathing, associate head coach Trish Betthauser and assistant coach Paul Nixon all took part in the Big Ten Foreign Tour through Australia, June 7-17. The Big Ten All-Stars finished the tour with a flawless 4-0 record.
DeMUTH OUT FOR THE SEASON
Indiana forward Jenny DeMuth will miss the 2004-05 season due to a torn ACL in her left knee.
DeMuth, Indiana's leading scorer (18.3 ppg) and rebounder (7.7 rpg) last season, injured her knee shortly after the team began their first official practice on Oct. 16. The Highland, Ind., native was named to the preseason All-Big Ten team as selected by the media. In 2003-04, DeMuth was a second team All-Big Ten honoree selection by the media and third team All-Big Ten selection by the conference coaches. She was the highest-scoring non-senior in the Big Ten last season and was the only conference player to rank in the top five in the Big Ten in both scoring and rebounding. She ranked fifth in each category with 18.3 points per game and 7.7 rebounds per game, respectively. DeMuth finished the season with 532 points, a mark that ranks fifth in school history. In addition, she eclipsed the 1,000-point scoring mark for her career on Feb. 19 against Michigan, becoming the 18th player and only the eighth junior in school history to accomplish the feat.
VALENTIN'S STREAK SNAPPED
On Saturday, Nov. 27, junior guard Cyndi Valentin snapped her streak of consecutive free throws made when she missed the back end of two free throws at the 18:08 mark in the first half. While her streak of 48-straight makes from the charity stripe came to an end, her effort still stands as a school record.
Prior to IU's game vs. the Bruins Valentin's last miss was against Michigan State on January 2, 2004
The Bloomington, Ind., native passed Pat Graham's mark of 38 consecutive to become Indiana's all-time leader in free throws made consecutively for either men or women.
OFF THE BENCH BOYD
Sophomore forward Annika Boyd has been productive off the bench during the Hoosiers' first three contests.
Boyd came up big for the Hoosiers when they played No. 8/8 Baylor as she pitched in nine points, which was the second-highest scoring effort on the team. In IU's match-up with Belmont, the Minneapolis, Minn., native came off the bench to score a game-high 11 points.
MOVING UP THE CHARTS
Two Hoosiers are on the rise on Indiana's all-time blocked shot lists. Assistant coach Quacy Barnes is the all-time leader with 289 blocks. Here is a look at where junior forward Angela Hawkins, and sophomore center Sarah McKay rank among blocked shots:

February 20, 2005 will be a big day for Hoosier women's basketball. Indiana hosts Purdue at 2 p.m., but the rivalry is hardly the story. When the Hoosiers and Boilermakers tangle, fans will have an opportunity to help fight cancer simply by showing up.
In honor of IU women's basketball fans, Vera Bradley Designs will donate $10,000 for breast cancer research if the Hoosiers 'Pack the Hall' with 10,000 people.
TUNE IN
Five of IU's games this season will be televised, including four home games and one on the road. The Penn State game on Jan. 16 at 2 p.m., the Michigan State game on Jan. 30 at 2 p.m., and the Purdue game (also Pack the Hall Night) on Feb. 20 at 2:00 p.m., will all be shown live from Assembly Hall on WTIU, while the Ohio State game set for Jan. 20 at 7 p.m., will be aired on a tape delay basis starting at 8 p.m.
Additionally, Fox Sports Net-Chicago will air the Jan. 27 match-up against the Fighting Illini in Champaign, Ill., at 8 p.m..

Volunteers will be on hand accepting donations to benefit Jill's House, which is a program designed to provide a temporary, home-like residence for patients undergoing outpatient therapy at the Indiana University Proton Therapy facility in Bloomington. Jill's House is named after former Bloomington resident and IU Student Jill Behrman who was abducted while riding her bicycle in May of 2000.
