IU Ends Fall Season (11-07-04)

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's rowing team ended its fall season with a strong showing against Dayton on Saturday at the Lake Lemon Rowing Facility.
The scrimmage with Dayton went extremely well," said head coach Steve Peterson. "The varsity crews got the better of their Dayton counterparts, and the novice traded pieces with the Flyers. All three of our Varsity Eights were rowing well, and the results proved it."
The conditions were ideal for a fall exhibition with temperatures in the low 60's. Despite a slight breeze the water was very flat and perfect for racing. The format of the scrimmage was the same as previous scrimmages where the crews did one three-mile piece, followed by several shorter three minute long pieces.
In all of the pieces the top varsity crews from Indiana proved to be the fastest, winning all of them. Even more impressive was the second varsity crew from IU who was able to beat the top Dayton crew on several of the pieces.
"It was a great way to end our fall racing," said Peterson. "The women have been working extremely hard to take technical changes we have been working on, and use them during a competitive situation. It may sound easy, but when you are dead tired, and you are less than halfway through the workout, technique is the first thing to go. So we have been really working to ingrain sound rowing principles into their rowing form, and today it really showed. "
Indiana will have one final appearance in the fall as the Cream and Crimson prepare for the annual Alumni Intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday, Nov. 13. The spring season will get underway after that in March as IU travels to South Carolina for regattas against Clemson, Purdue and Marist. Spring races against North Carolina, Louisville, Ohio State and Minnesota will also be part of the rowing season, as well as the Big Ten Championships held in Bloomington on April 30, 2005.
