IU Prepares for Boston U. (12-11-04)

Indiana (4-3) will look to win its second-straight road game of the season when it faces Boston University (3-2) Sunday, Dec. 12, in Boston, Mass. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. (EST). The game can be heard live on WHCC (105.1) with Jeremy Gray calling all the action.
This will be the second meeting between the Hoosiers and Terriers. The last time the teams met up was during the 1981-82 season with Indiana coming away with the win, 68-55.
The Hoosiers are coming off a win to the Maine Black Bears, 67-59.
Against the Black Bears, Cyndi Valentin was 12-for-12 from the free throw line (all in the second half). She tied for the second-best single-game percentage in the history of IU women's basketball. Jenny DeMuth holds the school-record, 14-for-14, set against Ball State in 2002. The team was 24-for-26 from the free throw line versus Maine (all in the second half); it was the third-best percentage (.923) in school history.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
Boston University owns a 3-2 record overall entering Sunday's game with the Hoosiers. The Terriers are a perfect 2-0 at home this season with wins over Wagner (66-44 on Nov. 27) and Central Connecticut State University (73-59 on Dec. 7).
The Terriers are led in scoring by freshman guard Corrine Jean and junior guard Rachel Vanderwal, with 14.4 and 10.8 points per game, respectively. Senior forward Adrienne Norris leads Boston in rebounding with 8.4 per game.
BU has totaled 23 blocked shots in its first five games this season, with senior forward Adrienne Norris leading the way with seven blocks. The Terriers lead America East with 4.60 blocks per game
Head Coach Kelly Greenberg is in her first season with the Terriers. Greenberg came to Boston after serving as the head coach of the University of Pennsylvania for five seasons. She posted an overall record of 84-54 and a 51-19 mark in Ivy League play.

The 2004-05 IU women's basketball team will look almost identical to last season's squad as it returns 11 members, including four starters from 2003-04. The Hoosiers welcome two new faces to the mix in Nikki Smith, a 5-9 guard from Sylvania, Ohio, and Kelli Agness, a 5-4 walk-on guard from Indianapolis, Ind.
HOOSIERS SCHEDULE 6TH IN SUMMERVILLE RPI POLL
According to the 2004-05 preseason Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WCBCA) Summerville RPI Poll, which measures strength of schedule, Indiana ranks sixth in the nation in overall schedule.
CAPTAIN CYNDI
Junior tri-captain Cyndi Valentin has been a huge offensive threat for the Hoosiers throughout their first six games of the season. She has led the team in scoring in six out if its last seven games, averaging 18.0 ppg. The 5-8 guard scored a game-high 28 points in her last outing against Maine on Dec. 10.
Four days earlier, Valentin netted a career-high 30 points in IU's, 66-59, loss to Indiana State, beating her previous career-best of 24 points on Jan. 18 vs. Northwestern.
Her seven three-pointers in that game where the third most in school history and also tied for tenth in the Big Ten record books.
DYNAMIC DEFENSE
Indiana's stifling defense has put them second in two categories among Big Ten Conference teams in scoring defense and field goal percent defense. The Hoosier defense has only allowed opponents to score an average of 50.4 points per game. In addition, over the course of seven games, IU has only allowed opponents average .317 percent from the field with a 121-for-382 shooting effort.
Blocks are another strong point for the Cream and Crimson as they rank fifth in the conference with 5.00 per game.
OFF THE BENCH BOYD
Sophomore forward Annika Boyd has been one of the most productive Hoosiers off the bench during the IU's first seven contests.
Perhaps Boyd's best game this season was when she notched a career-high 15 points in IU's four-point win over Louisville, 61-57 on Dec. 3. She also came up big for the Hoosiers down the stretch, connecting on key baskets to keep the Indiana alive.
Boyd was key for the Hoosiers when they played Belmont as well, as she came off the bench to score a game-high 11 points.
The Minneapolis, Minn., native is currently averaging 6.3 ppg and 2.0 rpg.
