Hoosiers Beat BU (12-12-04)

BOSTON - Junior guard Cyndi Valentin hit two free throws with two seconds left as the Indiana women's basketball team came up with a 62-60 road victory at Boston University on Sunday afternoon. With the win, IU moves to 5-3 on the year, while the Terriers fell to 3-3 on the season.
Indiana held a slim two-point lead with eight seconds left when Boston University's Larissa Parr hit two free throws to tie the score at 60-60. As IU was pushing the ball up the court, BU's Erica Kovach fouled Valentin with just three seconds left on the clock. Valentin, a 93% free throw shooter on the year who was an uncharacteristic 3-for-6 from the line on the day, calmly stepped to the line and nailed both charity shots giving IU the lead.
Indiana took an early four point lead, 8-4, on the strengths of some good ball movement and shooting as Valentin and senior Jamie Gathing each put in four points. Leading 9-7, IU went on a 10-2 spurt to open their largest lead of the game, a 10-point cushion, 19-9, with 13:04 left in the first.
The two teams would trade baskets for the next eight minutes of play as IU never let their advantage get less than eight points during that span.
With IU up 26-18 with just 5:29 left in the first, the Terriers came to life going on an 11-1 run to take a 29-27 lead into the half.
Both teams exchanged baskets and the lead to start the second half, as neither team owned more then a three-point lead. Two ties and two lead changes occurred during the first eight minutes of play.
A lay up by Valentin at 12:16 gave IU a 39-37 lead, but once again BU would answer back this time with two three-pointers and a lay up to take a 45-39 advantage with 9:53 left.
An IU 8-2 burst over the next three minutes quickly erased that as the contest was tied for the seventh time at 47-47 with 6:37 left.
Indiana and Boston would battle through five lead changes and four ties until Valentin's free throws clinched the game.
Valentin lead the Hoosiers with her first collegiate double-double ending the game with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Gathing finished with a career-high 14 points and six rebounds, while junior Angela Hawkins scored five points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Rachael Vanderwal and Becky Bonner led Boston with 16 and 14 points, respectively.
IU will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 18, as the Hoosiers host Eastern Michigan in Assembly Hall. Tip off is slated for 7 p.m. The game can be heard live on WHCC (105.1) with Jeremy Gray calling all the action.
