EMU's Perfect Streak Snapped (12-18-04)

BLOOMINGTON, Ind., - Junior guard Cyndi Valentin scored a game-high 22 points and Indiana used a 20-0 first half run en route to a 56-42 win over Eastern Michigan on Saturday evening in Assembly Hall. The Eagles entered the game as one of 10 undefeated teams in the nation, but a first half scoring drought of over eight minutes dropped EMU to 8-1, while the Hoosiers won their third-straight contest to improve to 6-3.
Sophomore guard Annika Boyd scored 12 points and finished with six rebounds in 27 minutes off the bench. The Minneapolis, Minn., native was nearly perfect from the free throw line connecting on 9-of-10 attempts. Valentin and junior forward Angela Hawkins each grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Indiana was the first to get on the board courtesy of a three-pointer from Valentin at 19:42 of the first half. Junior forward Nikki Knapp scored down low and senior center Ryann Kilgore made a pair of free throws to give Eastern Michigan its first lead of the game, 5-4, at 16:16.
With Eastern Michigan leading 10-7, senior guard LeeAnn Stephenson made a driving lay-up and sophomore center Sarah McKay scored on a feed from Stephenson, to put IU ahead 11-10 with 11:30 to play in the frame.
Indiana exploded on the offensive end and over an eight-minute, 20-0 run; Valentin led the Hoosiers with 10 points. During the span Eastern Michigan was 0-for-12 from the floor and committed three turnovers. For the half, EMU shot 7-for-32 (21.9%) from the field, including missing both attempts from beyond the three-point arc.
Valentin made a pair of free throws; junior forward Brigett Branson added one free throw and Valentin connected on a tear-drop runner to push the lead to 16-10 with 7:28 to play.
Boyd drained a triple; Valentin made another basket, and then added two free throws, to widen the IU margin to 23-10. McKay and Valentin each made a pair from the charity stripe to give the Hoosiers a 27-10 lead with 4:32 to go.
EMU scored for the first time since the 13:02 mark, at 4:19 of the half, on a basket from freshman center Colleen Russell to stop the IU run.
The teams would trade baskets for the remainder of the half, but a trey by Valentin in the final seconds of the frame gave IU a 37-17 lead at the break. The team co-captain led all scorers with 16 first half points.
Eastern Michigan opened the second half scoring at 19:13 on a lay-up from senior guard Erika Ford to cut the IU lead to 37-19. The Eagles would add a free throw from junior center Kristen Kilgore, but Hawkins scored down in the post for the Hoosiers first bucket of the half.
Stephenson nailed a three-pointer to push the IU margin to 42-20, its largest of the game, with 15:32 to go. Ford answered Stephenson, with a trey of her own for EMU, at 15:10.
Senior guard Ryan Coleman made a pair of jumpers, sandwiched between a basket from Stephenson, but the Eagles still trailed 44-27 with 12:52 to play.
Ford drove to the basket for another two points and sophomore forward Amy Freidenberger made a lay-up to cut the IU lead to 13, 44-31, with 9:54 remaining.
Sophomore forward Sarah VanMetre connected on a three-pointer with 8:47 to play cutting the Hoosiers advantage to 44-34, forcing Head Coach Kathi Bennett to call a timeout.
Kristen Kilgore made one free throw to cut the Cream and Crimson margin to single-digits at 48-39 with 4:40 to play in the game. EMU would get as close as 50-42 with 54 seconds to play, but a pair of late free throws from Valentin put the game out of reach.
Eastern Michigan struggled from the free throw line shooting 42.1 percent (8-for-19) on the evening.

Indiana will return to action at home against Virginia Commonwealth on Wednesday, Dec. 22, in Assembly Hall. The game will be part of a doubleheader with the IU men's team as the Hoosiers will host Charlotte at 8 p.m.
