Bloomington, Ind. -At the 2004 Hoosier Duals, the Indiana wrestling team won 18 of 20 matches to improve to 3-0 on the season as it defeated Gardner-Webb, 31-6 and Cumberland, 50-0. The Hoosiers only allowed one total takedown between the two duals.
Against Gardner-Webb, IU won eight of ten matches, scoring bonus points in five of them. At 125-pounds, All-American and eighth-ranked Joe Dubuque scored a 19-2 technical fall over Jon Neal. Dyer followed the Dubuque win with a 14-5 major decision over Josh Lowe. Senior and 11th-ranked Mike Simpson struggled but still won a hard fought 5-3 decision over Justin Lansley. With Indiana leading 12-0, Gardner-Webb posted back-to-back wins at 149 and 157 pounds.
Redshirt freshman Brandon Becker at 165 pounds, broke the Bulldogs two match winning streak as he defeated Brenden Couture, 8-1. At 174 pounds, Tim Scarl scored a 12-5 decision over Chad Davis. Andy Rios recorded IU's second technical fall of the dual in a 21-6 win over Kyle Hood. Josh Buuck and Pat DeGain ended the IU win with back-to-back major decision over Brandon Beach, 12-2 and Brent Blackwell, 11-3.
"Our middle and upper weights had to move up and they did a solid job today," head coach Duane Goldman said. "They did a good job of taking up the challenge."
The dual against Cumberland was much the same as IU recorded eight bonus point victories behind three forfeits, two technical falls, two pins and one major decision. IU reached the 50-point mark for the first time since a 52-6 victory over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville in 2001.
Becker started IU out strong as he recorded his third fall of the year over Kevin McKinney at the 3:54 mark in the match. Scarl followed with a 16-0 technical fall over Zach Padgett.
IU then recorded three straight forfeits at 184, 197 and heavyweight.
Dubuque recorded his second technical fall of the day over Rob Carlyle, 20-5. Dyer placed E.J. Lowe onto the mat 34 seconds into their match before Justin King scored a 9-2 decision over Kyle Burkett. Slee gave IU its final bonus point match of the day as he recorded a major decision over Jared Gindstaff, 15-5.
"It was good to wrestle at home," Goldman siad. "It was a good opportunity to get a number of new faces on the mat. I was pleased with our performance. We hope to continue to move forward as we have a couple of tough matches a head of us."
The Hoosiers return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 21 as the travel to Kent, Ohio in search of their 600 dual win in school history against Kent State and James Madison at 3 p.m.
