Hoosiers Notch Two

Kent, Ohio - The 20th-ranked Indiana Hoosiers wrestling team improved its record to 5-0 on the season posting two victories over Kent State, 23-13 and James Madison, 39-4 Tuesday afternoon at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center. With the win over Kent State the Hoosiers, recorded its 600 dual career victory.
Against Kent State, Brian Dyer got IU on the board first as he major decision Clayton Stark, 15-6 at 133 pounds. Senior and 12th-ranked Mike Simpson gave IU a 7-0 lead with his 8-3 win over Jason McGee. At 149 pounds, Kent State closed the gap to 7-3 as Issac Knable dropped a 9-4 decision to Jason Blake. Redshirt-freshman Brandon Becker extended the IU lead to 10-3 with his 6-0 win over Kurt Gross.
Max Dean followed the Becker win at 157 pounds with a pin over Nick Brenner at the 4:40 mark at 165 pounds. Junior and 16th-ranked Brady Richardson returned to action after missing the Hoosiers Duals and dropped his match to Aaron Miller, 13-6.
In the first of three matches featuring ranked opponents, 16th-ranked Andrew Rios dropped a 12-4 decision to 14th-ranked Alex Camargo, to bring Kent State within six at 16-10.
At 197 pounds, Josh Buuck snapped Kent State's two match winning streak as he defeated Ben Rings, 8-6 in overtime to give IU a commanding lead at 19-10.
The second match featuring ranked wrestles saw 18th-ranked Pat DeGain fall to Tomas Rodriquez, 5-3.
At 125 pounds, saw the highlighted match of the dual as ninth-ranked Joe Dubuque faced off against 19th-ranked Drew Opfer. The All-American proved to be too much as he major decision Opfer, 12-3 to give IU the match at 23-13.
"Joe match was big," head coach Duane Goldman said. "Because Opfer is a quality opponent. We knew it would be a tough match and he did a good job today."
Against James Madison, IU won nine of ten matches. Of IU's nine wins, six earned the Hoosiers bonus points. The dual started off at 125 pounds as Dubuque improved to 8-1 on the season with his fifth straight bonus point victory pinning Marshall Sweet at the 1:35 mark in the first period.
Dyer followed the Dubuque win with a medical injury default over Shawn Horst at 133 pounds. Simpson followed with a 12-3 major decision over Brian Kibler at 141 pounds. Redshirt-freshman Prescott Slee scored his second bonus point victory of the season over Brandon Moore via technical fall, 19-4.
Becker improved to 10-4 on the season with his fifth straight win over Derick Schoenly, 3-0 at 157 pounds. Dean recorded his second bonus point victory of the day technical falling John Divello, 23-7 at 165 pounds. After a Scarl loss, Rios rebounded from a earlier loss in the day to post a 17-9 major decision over Jason Chalfant.
Buuck and David Herman ended the Hoosier win with a 7-4 victory over Zach Winfrey at 197 pounds and an 11-6 decision over Chris Cvitan at the heavyweight position.
"I thought we wrestled and competed hard today," Goldman said. "Kent State is a quality team and it is always hard to win here. I am pleased with the effort we gave today. We got a chance to get a lot of guys some time on the mat today."
The Hoosiers are off until, Dec. 29-30 as the will travel to Evanston, Ill for the 42nd annual Midland Championships.
