Hoosiers Sixth After Day One

In day one the Hoosiers were led by senior heavyweight Pat DeGain, who advanced to the semifinals after posting two victories.
DeGain opened competition with a 5-2 decision over Bubba Gritter of Central Michigan before ousting third-seed Matt fields of Iowa, 3-1 and 11th-seed Paul Weibel of Lehigh, 3-1.
DeGain advanced to tomorrows semifinal match to face off against Division II defending National Champion, Lee Sigman of Nebraska-Omaha.
Senior Mike Simpson fell into the consolation finals after dropping his match to Andy Simmons of Michigan State, 4-0.
Junior Andy Rios at 184 pounds went 2-1 on the day defeating Scott O'Rear of Cal State Bakersfield, 17-9 in the opening round and Ron Howard of Cleveland State, 15-9. Rios lost a 12-8 decision to Mike Tamillow of Northern Iowa, 12-8.
In the opening rounds of the Championships, tenth-seeded Simpson opened with a 4-2 decision over David Silva of Elmhurst College and a 15-2 major decision over Jon Spires of Ohio at 141 pounds.
Rios at 184 pounds opened with a 17-9 major decision over Scott O'Rear of Cal State Bakersfield.
Sixth-seeded DeGain posted a 5-2 decision over Bubba Gritter of Central Michigan in the opening round.
At 133 pounds, Dyer opened competition with a 5-2 decision over Tim Norman of Oregon State before falling to third-seed Matt Azevedo, 13-3. Dyer saw his run come to an end with a 1-0 loss to 11th-seed Jeff Everleth of Penn.
Redshirt-freshman Brandon Becker scored a fall over Alex Nelson of Northern Illinois in a time of 1:42 before falling to second seed, Alex Tirapelle of Illinois, 10-5. After falling into the consolation rounds, Becker defeated Jaimie Alvarez of San Francisco State, 11-5 and Brock Wittmeyer of Penn, 8-1 at 157 pounds.
In the afternoon session, Becker posted two more victories over Cole Pape of Iowa via fall in a time of 1:49 and a 10-0 major decision over Keegan Mueller of Ohio State.
At 165 pounds, redshirt-freshman Tim Scarl went 1-2 on the day falling to Matt Veres of Franklin & Marshall, 3-1 before pinning Casey Rodis of MacMurray College in a time of 1:50. He then lost to Donny Reynolds of Illinois, 3-0.
Max Dean posted a 1-2 record defeating Rich Ferguson of Penn, 6-4 in overtime.
Redshirt freshman Justin Curran at 197 pounds dropped his opening round match against John Foscolo of Rutgers, 4-3. Curran also posted a 11-2 major decision over Tony Lyssiotis of Eastern Michigan and recorded a medical injury forfeit of teammate Josh Buuck. Buuck also posted a 1-2 record.
The Hoosiers return to action tomorrow, Dec. 30, when they compete in the final day of competition at the 42nd Midlands Championships beginning a 9 a.m.
