iHoosiers Prepare for Iowa (12-29-04)

THE BASICS
• Indiana (7-3) cracks into the Big Ten portion of its schedule when it travels to Iowa City, Iowa to begin a three-game conference road swing when it takes on the unbeaten No. 18/19 Hawkeyes (11-0) on Thursday, Dec. 30. Tip off is set for at 8:05 EST and will be played at the Carver Hawkeye Arena. The game can be heard locally on WHCC (105.1) with Jeremy Gray calling all of the action.
• This will be the second ranked opponent Indiana has faced this season. The Hoosiers previously met up with then No. 8/8 Baylor and were defeated, 60-47.
• The Hawkeyes got the best of the Hoosiers last season, claiming a pair of victories. Iowa leads the series, 33-12
• The Cream and Crimson are 9-13 in Big Ten openers, including a 2-2 ledger under head coach Kathi Bennett.
SCOUTING IOWA
No. 18/19 Iowa (11-0) is one of the five remaining undefeated teams in the nation. The Hawkeyes, who are off to their best start in 11 years, most recently triumphed over UW-Milwaukee, 59-51, on Tuesday, Dec. 28.
Three Iowa players average double-digit scoring in Crystal Smith (18.1), Jamie Cavey (15.6) and Johanna Solverson (13.0). Krista VandeVenter helps Iowa underneath as she averages 8.5 rebounds per game.
Lisa Bluder is in the midst of her fifth season as the head basketball coach at the University of Iowa. Under Bluder's direction, the Hawkeyes have advanced to four consecutive post-season appearances (3 NCAA and 1 WNIT). She has posted a 84-52 record at Iowa and her 20-year record stands at 438-191. Bluder had stints at Drake (1990-2000) and NAIA school St. Ambrose (1984-1990) prior to taking over the Hawkeye program.
Last season, Iowa finished 16-13 overall while playing the 14th most difficult schedule in the nation and tied for fourth in the league with a 10-6 mark.
VALENTIN ON THE VERGE OF 1,000 PTS
Junior Cyndi Valentin is just 79 points away from becoming the 19th player in Indiana history to score 1,000 career points. Valentin has 921 career points entering Thursday's game. In the likely event she reaches the 1,000-point plateau this year, Valentin would become only the ninth player in school history to accomplish the feat in her junior year. Senior Jenny DeMuth was the last Hoosier to achieve this accomplishment when she scored her 1,000th career point last year on Feb. 19, 2004 against Michigan State.
ONCE A SPOILER ALWAYS A SPOILER
This will not be the first time Indiana has faced an undefeated team this season. The Hoosiers will be in a familiar situation when they go up against an unbeaten Iowa Hawkeye team. The Hoosiers served as a spoiler on Dec. 18, when they snapped Eastern Michigan's perfect 8-0 record, 56-42.
DYNAMIC DEFENSE
Indiana's stifling defense has put them near the top in three categories among Big Ten Conference teams. The Hoosiers rank first in 3-point field goal percent defense (.279) and defensive rebounds (29.10 rpg). In addition, IU is second in scoring defense as it has limited opponents to an average of 49.6 points per game over the course of 10 games.
SHINING STEPHENSON
Senior guard LeeAnn Stephenson had a career night when the Hoosiers met up with Virginia Commonwealth on Dec. 22, as the senior guard notched a career-high and game-high 17 points (her previous was 10) to go along with an all-time best seven assists (her previous was 5). She also matched her career-high in rebounds with three. The Garland, Texas, native was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line and was 4-for-8 from the field.
