IU Slips Past Louisville, 61-57 (12-03-04)

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -Three Hoosiers scored in double-figures as junior guard Cyndi Valentin (16 points), sophomore guards Annika Boyd (15 points,) and Leah Enterline (11 points) led Indiana to a hard-fought, 61-57, victory over the Louisville Cardinals Friday night at Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers, who won their third-straight home game of the season, improve to 3-2 overall, while the Cardinals slip to 2-3 on the year.
It wasn't until 3:23 left in the second half that IU began to take control of the game. Boyd connected on a conventional three-point play to put the Hoosiers up seven, 58-51, but the Cards put forth a late charge and brought the game within one, 58-57 with just under a minute left to go keeping everyone on the edge of their seats. A foul by Louisville's Angel Bradley brought junior forward Angela Hawkins to the line. The Winter Haven, Fla., missed both free throws, but redeemed herself with an offensive rebound to keep the ball in favor of the Hoosiers. Seconds later, another late foul by the Cards would bring Valentin to the line, who in turn sank both of her shots from the charity stripe, to put IU up three, 60-57, with 20 seconds remaining, leaving room for Louisville to tie. However, a great defensive trap at the top of the key over sophomore forward Missy Taylor forced her to take a shot that would not come close to falling. The Cardinals had no choice but to foul Boyd who then sank one of her free throws to give IU the four-point win.
"We needed this,"said Head Coach Kathi Bennett. "This was a game against a good team. We have been playing good basketball, but Arkansas was a good team and Baylor was a good team. We needed a win like this against a quality opponent. Tonight was nice."
In the beginning of the game, Indiana applied its normal intense defense and forced Louisville to struggle on their end of the court, going 0-for-6 in the first five minutes of the game but it wouldn't take long for them to get in their offensive rhythm. With the game tied, 7-7, Louisville's leading scorer, sophomore center Jazz Covington, grew red-hot from the field and scored the next seven points for the Cards in span of a minute and a half, giving them the lead, 16-9.
A few possessions later, Boyd would do the same for the Hoosiers, initiating an 11-2 run with a quick five points of her own. Indiana then received buckets from Hawkins, Valentin and senior forward Jamie Gathing, down the stretch and moved ahead, 26-24. Two free throws by the Cardinals' Bradley, would tie the score at 26. Both teams would score two more points before the break, leaving the score at a deadlock, 28-28.
Covington finished with a game-high 20 points. Taylor and junior guard Jessica Huggins finished with 14 points and 10 points, respectively.
Indiana out-rebounded Louisville, 37-29, with Valentin and Bradley each grabbing a game-high eight rebounds for their respective teams.
The Hoosiers will be back in action on Monday, Dec. 6, when it travels to Terre Haute, Ind., to take on Indiana State at the Hulman Center. Tip-off with the Sycamores is set for 7 p.m. The game can be heard live on WHCC (105.1) with Jeremy Gray calling all the action.

Game Notes: Boyd's 15 points were a career-high. Her previous career-high was 13 points on Dec. 14 against North Carolina State.Kali Kullerg dished out a career-high three assists, one more than her previous career-high which she did on four different occasions.
