IU Falls to No. 3 Michigan, 22-12

Bloomington, Ind. - In its final home match of the season, the Indiana wrestling team put forth an inspired effort, but came up just short against No. 3 Michigan, 22-12 on Friday evening. IU drops to 17-7 overall and 1-4 in the Big Ten, while the Wolverines move to 15-3 overall and 5-1 in the league.
"We battled hard and represented ourselves well tonight," said Indiana head coach Duane Goldman. "Michigan is a great team. Today we won some of the close matches and took a step in the right direction. I was pleased with our effort."
Seniors Coyte Cooper and Andrew Wolf competed in their final matches at University Gym. Cooper, the sixth-ranked wrestler in the nation at 141, defeated No. 20 Clark Forward, 6-5 in sudden death in his final home match. Wolf lost a hard-fought 3-0 decision against Chase Verdoorn at 197.
"Coyte did a great job," said Goldman. "He has wrestled against Forward for four years, and it's a rivalry match for him. Andrew came in and moved up a weight class and represented himself really well. Sometimes there is victory within a loss, and I think he achieved that tonight."
In the opening match of the night, 10th-ranked Joe Dubuque gave the Hoosiers an early lead with an upset of third-ranked Mark Moos, 5-2 at 125. Following a scoreless first period, Dubuque grabbed a 4-1 lead halfway through the second period with two takedowns and held a 4-2 lead after two periods. The sophomore maintained his lead the rest of the way and added a riding point for the 5-2 victory.
With the win, Dubuque improves to 25-4 on the season and 3-2 in the league. Moos falls to 19-4 and 3-3 in the conference.
After a U-M victory evened the match at 3-3, Cooper put Indiana back in front 6-3 with his victory. The Anacortes, Wash., trailed 4-3 in the third before recording an escape to even the match and force an overtime period. Neither wrestler tallied a point in the first sudden death, but Cooper scored two points on a reversal and held off Forward the rest of the way for the 6-5 win.
Cooper is now 33-1 on the season and 5-0 in Big Ten action. He has won consecutive conference matches over ranked opponents in sudden death and has won nine straight matches overall.
"It's nice to go out with a win," said Cooper. "Come the end of the season, I have to win close matches, and I have been winning them lately."
Following a pair of Wolverine victories, true freshman Mike Sabatello nearly pulled off a major upset against fourth-ranked Pat Owen. Sabatello trailed 6-2 before closing the gap to 7-6 late in the third period. However, Owen closed out the match with an escape and a riding time point en route to a 9-6 win.
Michigan held a 16-6 lead when No. 14 Brady Richardson ignited a Hoosier rally, downing Nick Roy, 6-5 at 174. With the match tied at 3-3 in the second period, Richardson netted an escape and a reversal for a 6-3 lead, giving him all he needed to pick up his 23rd victory of the year. The win moves the sophomore to 23-8 on the season and 2-3 in the conference.
Junior Andy Rios cut the Wolverine lead to 16-12 after his 6-5 decision over Joshua Weitzel. Rios fell behind 3-2 heading into the third period before scoring four points on a takedown and a reversal to take a 6-4 lead. Weitzel cut the advantage to 6-5 with an escape, but could not get any closer. Rios now sits at 24-8 overall and 2-3 in the Big Ten.
Verdoorn halted Michigan's two-match losing streak with his 3-0 decision over Wolf, and No. 5 Greg Wagner closed out the match with a 7-5 decision over 15th-ranked Josh Buuck, giving the Wolverines the 22-12 victory. The loss was just the second of the season for the redshirt freshman as a heavyweight (12-2), knocking his overall record to 15-6 and Big Ten mark to 3-2.
Up next, the Hoosiers head to West Lafayette for a match against No. 15 Purdue on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Boilermakers enter the match with a 17-5 overall record and a 3-3 mark in the Big Ten.
"We need to be consistent individually in our effort against Purdue," said Goldman. "They are ranked ahead of us, and we have to compete hard on the road."
