Fayetteville, Ark. - Day one of the Tyson Invitational concluded Friday with several highlights provided by the Indiana track and field teams.
On the men's side, a pair of distance runners made their marks for Indiana. Stephen Haas and Chris Powers finished fourth and fifth in the 5,000 meter run, running a 14:06.29 and a 14:13.27, respectively. The story, however, is the fact that those two times represent the two fastest times run by anybody in the Big Ten this year by a wide margin. Prior to Haas' and Powers' efforts on Friday, the best time run by a Big Ten athlete in the 5,000 meters was 14:45.80.
David Neville, III continued his solid showing this year by running a 21.26 in the 200 meter dash, representing the second-fastest time of any Big Ten athlete in the event. Neville also turned in a 47.35 in the 400 meter dash to finish second among all collegians competing in the event at the Tyson Invitational.
In a field of 36 competing in the 3,000 meters, Nathan Purcell and Charlie Koeppen finished 9th and 10th, respectively, with Purcell running a 8:29.80 and Koeppen turning in a 8:30.53.
On the women's side, Audrey Giesler turned in the second-fastest time of any Big Ten athlete in the 3,000 meters this year by running a 9:34.70 to finish as Friday's runner-up. That mark shattered her previous personal best of 9:52.87.
In the sprints, Ara Towns qualified for the finals in the 60 meter dash, by running a 7.42 in the preliminary heat. Towns ran a 7.41 in the event final to finish fourth. Her time was the second-fastest mark of anyone in the Big Ten this year.
