Hoosiers Lose to No. 15 Purdue, 21-17

West Lafayette, Ind. -- The Indiana wrestling team lost a 21-17 decision to 15th-ranked Purdue on Sunday afternoon. IU falls to 17-8 overall and 1-6 in the Big Ten, while the Boilermakers improve to 18-5 and 4-3 in the league.
"I was really pleased and impressed with the way we wrestled," said Indiana head coach Duane Goldman. "I felt our guys showed a lot of heart throughout the entire match. Even though the score doesn't show it, I thought our guys were deserving of the victory."
Sophomore Joe Dubuque started the Hoosiers off on the right foot, pinning Sean Schmaltz at the 1:13 mark. The 10th-ranked wrestler in the nation moves to 26-4 on the season and 4-2 in conference action. Additionally, his seven pins are tops in the nation at 125 pounds.
Purdue evened the match at 6-6 when No. 19 Rene Hernandez scored a pin, but No. 6 Coyte Cooper put Indiana in the lead with a 17-1 technical fall victory over Doug Withstandley. Cooper is now 34-1 overall and a perfect 6-0 in Big Ten action at 141. He has won 10 straight matches since his lone defeat of the season on Jan. 17.
The seesaw battle continued with the Boilermakers capturing the next two matches to take a 12-11 lead. However, true freshman Mike Sabatello gave the Hoosiers a 14-12 advantage with his first career Big Ten victory. The Arlington Heights, Ill., native downed John DeCeault, 6-5 in overtime at 165.
Sabatello trailed 3-0 entering the third period, but recorded a takedown to close the gap to 3-2 early in the period. He eventually grabbed a 5-4 advantage with his second takedown of the third, but DeCeault scored a riding point to send it to sudden death. In the overtime, Sabatello pulled out the victory with a penalty point.
The 165-pounder evens his record at 4-4 and moves to 1-2 in Big Ten action.
After three straight Purdue victories, redshirt freshman Josh Buuck picked up the final Hoosier win of the afternoon, upsetting sixth-ranked Israel Blevins, 11-6. The 15th-ranked heavyweight is now 16-6 overall and 4-2 in Big Ten action.
Indiana closes out its Big Ten season, Sunday, February 22 against the Michigan State Spartans. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
