No. 12 Minnesota Stops IU

Bloomington, Ind. - Facing its third ranked team in four Big Ten matches, the Indiana wrestling team fell to No. 12 Minnesota, 32-7. The Hoosiers drop to 17-6 overall and 1-3 in the Big Ten, while the Golden Gophers improve to 9-6 and even their conference mark at 3-3.
The Gophers won the first four matches of the meet when 18th-ranked Andy Rios (184) appeared poised to pick up the first IU win of the evening. However, after the junior scored a takedown to even the match at 5-5, Josh McLay recorded an escape late in the third period for a 6-5 victory. Rios is now 23-8 on the season and 1-3 in Big Ten action.
Next up, No. 10 Pat DeGain tried to get the Hoosiers on the board, but sustained an ankle injury and was unable to finish his match against No. 1 Damion Hahn. The two 197-pounders were scoreless early in the second period when the junior suffered the injury. DeGain now stands at 22-5 overall (2-2 in the Big Ten).
Redshirt freshman Josh Buuck put his undefeated record on the line at heavyweight against sixth-ranked Cole Konrad. Buuck tallied a reversal with one minute remaining in the first period to even the match at 2-2. The score remained that way until Buuck took a 3-2 lead following an escape in the second frame.
The Fort Wayne, Ind., native maintained his lead with one minute left in the final period when Konrad scored a reversal to take a 4-3 lead. Buuck tied it up once again following an escape with five seconds remaining, but Konrad picked up the victory, 5-4 with a riding time point.
Buuck drops his first match as a heavyweight (12-1) and is 15-5 overall and 3-1 in the Big Ten.
After Buuck's close call at heavyweight, sophomore Joe Dubuque earned Indiana's first victory of the night at 125. The 10th-ranked wrestler in the nation defeated Andrew Domingues by major decision, 15-4.
Dubuque built a 7-1 lead through one period and used an escape and takedown to open a nine-point advantage at 10-1 entering the third period. The Bloomfield, N.J., native cruised in the final period, winning for the 24th time this season. Dubuque goes to 24-4 on the season with seven major decisions and evens his league mark at 2-2.
Fifth-ranked Coyte Cooper scored the final IU victory of the night at 141, knocking off 14th-ranked Tommy Owen, 4-2 in overtime. The two grapplers wrestled a scoreless first period before Cooper netted the first point of the match with an escape early in period two. Owen responded with a takedown for a 2-1 lead, but Cooper recorded another escape to tie the match at 2-2 after two periods.
Neither wrestler produced any points in the third period, forcing overtime. Cooper pulled out the victory with a takedown with 25 seconds remaining for the 4-2 win. The senior improves to 31-1 overall and a perfect 4-0 in the Big Ten. He has won eight consecutive matches following his first loss of the season on Jan. 17.
Up next, the Hoosiers conclude their home schedule when they host No. 2 Michigan on Friday, Feb. 13 before traveling to West Lafayette for a match against No. 18 Purdue on Sunday, Feb. 15. The Michigan match will begin at 7 p.m. with the Purdue match slated to start at 2 p.m.
