Indiana Heads To Big Ten Championships (4-28-04)

BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
The University of Iowa will serve as host to the 2004 Big Ten Rowing Championships. The event is scheduled for May 1 at Lake Macbride.
The Hoosiers will compete against Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State and Wisconsin. Michigan is the defending Big Ten Champion. The Wolverines have claimed the title three times - in 2000, 2001 and 2003. Ohio State is the only other school to win a Big Ten rowing crown.
The preliminary morning heats will begin at 8 a.m., while the afternoon final sessions will be held at 12:15 p.m.

About the Opponents
Ohio State and Minnesota have claimed the top seeds in all six events for the 2004 Big Ten Women's Rowing Championships.
The Buckeyes' First Varsity Eight crew, ranked No. 1 in the nation for four straight weeks, is the top seed in that event, while Ohio State also will be the top seed in the II Varsity Eight race. The OSU V8 was named Big Ten Boat of the Week a record four times this season. It is the first Big Ten crew to be ranked first nationally since the inception of women's rowing as a Conference sport in 2000. Coach Andy Teitelbaum's squad won the Big Ten Championships Title in 2002.
Minnesota has claimed the No. 1 seed in the other four events - I Varsity Four, I Novice Eight, II Novice Eight and II Varsity Four. Coach Wendy Davis' I Novice Eight boat is undefeated this spring, and the I Varsity Eight boat is coming off a pair of wins over Kansas and SMU last weekend, earning Big Ten Boat of the Week laurels. The Gophers' highest Big Ten Championships finish was fifth place in 2002.

Competition Format
The competition format for all six events shall be one heat of four boats and one heat of three boats. The top two finishing boats advance to the Grand Final, while the last boats compete in the Petite Final.
When there are only five entries in an event, there shall be a five-boat heat in the morning for lane positions, and a five-boat heat in the afternoon for the finals.
