Day One at Virginia Duals

Hampton, Va. - At the 2005 Virginia Duals, the sixth-seeded Indiana Hoosiers advanced to the semifinals after posting two victories over third-seeded Edinboro, 26-10, and Lock Haven, 27-4. IU will face seventh-seeded Tennessee-Chattanooga, who upset second-seed, Missouri 19-16, on Friday night.
Junior All-American Joe Dubuque opened up the dual against Edinboro winning his seventh-straight match pinning Greg Sill in a time of 1:44 to give IU an early 6-0 lead. At 133 pounds, Edinboro cut IU's lead to 6-4 as third-ranked Shawn Bunch scored a 15-4 major decision over redshirt freshman Brian Dyer. Senior Mike Simpson extended IU's lead to five as he defeated Ron Doppelheur, 8-4 at 141 pounds.
At 149 pounds, redshirt-freshman Issac Knable dropped a 5-1 decision to Hobbs.
At 157 pounds, redshirt freshman Brandon Becker scored a 15-0 technical fall over Hayden Harrison. After back-to-back losses at 165 and 174 pounds to bring Edinboro within one at 14-13, the Hoosiers would end the dual winning the last three matches.
Junior Andy Rios scored a 5-3 decision over Jim Gibson at 184 pounds. Josh Buuck defeated Mike LaBella, 3-1, at 197 pounds before senior heavyweight Pat DeGain scored a 5-3 decision over Joe Hennis.
In the opening round, the Hoosiers won nine of 10 matches over Lock Haven University.
With the dual starting at 125 pounds, Dubuque got IU onto the scoreboard first with a 5-2 decision over Obe Blanc. Dyer, followed with a 6-3 decision over Jim Collins at 133. Simpson extended IU's lead to 9-0 with an 8-6 win over Matt Fittery.
Lock Haven cut the IU lead to 9-4 at 149 pounds as Josh Medina ousted redshirt-freshman Prescott Slee, 15-5. Becker got IU back into the win column at 157 pounds as he shutout Andrew Martin, 6-0. Redshirt-freshman Max Dean defeated B.J. Mikeska, 7-3 at 165 pounds.
At 174 pounds, junior Brady Richardson wrestled for the first time since Dec. 12 and scored a 10-0 major decision over Justin Ponce. Rios gave IU another win at 184 pounds as he defeated Justin Johnson, 9-4. At 197 pounds, Buuck gave IU it's second of three bonus point wins with a 15-2 major decision over Homer, before DeGain ended the match with a fall over Tim Myers in a time of 3:56.
"We wrestled good today," Head Coach Duane Goldman said. "I though we did a good job against Lock Haven. Against Edinboro we stepped up our intensity level. We had some guys who haven't been in the lineup in a while wrestler hard today."
The Hoosiers will return to action tomorrow taking on UT-Chattanooga at 2 p.m. at the Hampton Coliseum.
