Hoosiers Open Big Ten with Win

Bloomington, Ind. - The 19th-ranked Indiana wrestling team opened up Big Ten competition with a 22-14 win over 20th-ranked Northwestern, Friday night at University Gym. With the win the Hoosiers improve to 9-1 on the season, while Northwestern fell to 7-1.
With the dual starting at 125 pounds, junior All-American Joe Dubuque improved to 13-1 on the season, winning his ninth in a row by pinning Jordan Adams in a time of 2:44 to give IU a 6-0 lead.
At 133 pounds, redshirt-freshman Brian Dyer raced to a 6-2 first period lead and held onto defeat Dan Quintela, 6-3 to give IU a 9-0 lead. Wresting for the first time in dual competition this season and for a sick Mike Simpson, senior Cameron Sakon fell to 16th-ranked Ryan Lang, 10-1, at 141 pounds to bring Northwestern within five at 9-4
At 149 pounds, IU extended its lead to 12-4 as redshirt freshman Issac Knable scored an exciting 6-4 overtime decision over Greg Hagel. Knable jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on a three-point near fall in the first period, before Hagel cut the lead to one at 3-2. With Hagel up 4-3 and time running out in the third period, he was charged with his second stall warning resulting in a point for Knable forcing overtime tied at four. In the extra frame, Knable scored a takedown 18 seconds into the period for the win.
IU extended its lead to 16-4 at 157 pounds as 19th-ranked, redshirt-freshman Brandon Becker dominated Mike Kimberlin, accumulating almost four minutes of riding time in the 9-0 major decision.
The Hoosiers won their third match in a row as redshirt-freshman Max Dean defeated Nick Hayes at 165 pounds, 7-2 to give IU a 19-4 lead. Northwestern snapped the Hoosiers winning streak as fourth-ranked Jake Herbert defeated Brady Richardson, 12-10, at 174 pounds.
Northwestern closed the gap to nine at 19-10 at 184 pounds as junior Andy Rios lost in the closing seconds to Mike Tamillow, 5-4. With Rios up, 4-3, Tamillow scored a takedown with 37 seconds remaining and was then able to ride Rios out for the win.
At 197 pounds, Northwestern cut the IU lead to five at 19-14 as sophomore Josh Buuck dropped a 15-4 major decision to Matt Delguyd.
Senior Pat DeGain ended the Wildcats opportunity for an win as he scored a 5-2 decision over Scott Johnson.
"This was a good team win for us," head coach Duane Goldman said. "We knew that there were going to be a lot of close matches and we came through tonight. I have to tip my hat to Pat (DeGain) for his performance tonight. He wasn't feeling too good tonight and fought hard for the team."
The Hoosiers return to action tomorrow as they travel to Indianapolis, Ind., for the Indianapolis Duals beginning at 10 a.m.
