Hoosiers Fall to Michigan

Junior Angela Hawkins led the Hoosiers with 16 points and 10 rebounds, her second double-double of the season and eighth of her career. Freshman Nikki Smith had a career-high 11 points, while sophomore Leah Enterline contributed 11 points and a team-high five assists. Tabitha Pool led Michigan with a game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds. "We had a lot of players step up today," said head coach Kathi Bennett. "We improved a great deal since the Ohio State game."
Indiana trailed by one, 60-59, when Enterline's jumper at 1:11 gave IU a one-point lead. The Wolverines would then came back to take the lead at 62-61, and, with 32 seconds left, they forced a Hoosier turnover. On the in-bounds play, Indiana put some heavy pressure on the U-M, but Michigan would hold the ball for 30 seconds until firing a three-pointer. On the shot, Michigan would get the offense rebound and a foul hitting one-of two from the line to build its lead to two, 63-61, with just one second left on the clock. IU was unable to get off a final shot as Pool's second free throw rimmed out as time expired.
"I take full responsibility for not fouling on that last series," said Bennett. "We wanted to pressure the ball and get a steal, but we should have fouled with the clock running down."
Indiana led by as many as five, 8-3, to start the game, but Michigan responded with a 12-2 run over the course of four minutes to take a 15-10 advantage with 13:11 in the first.
IU would regain the lead again with 6:02 in the first half, as Enterline nailed a jumper from the free throw line. The two teams would trade basket after that as the Wolverines went into the half with a slim one-point lead, 29-28.
Once again both teams would trade baskets to start the second half, as neither squad owned more then a one-point advantage. Indiana would then build a three-point lead, 46-43, with 8:52 left in the game.
IU and Michigan would battle for the next six minutes, but the Hoosiers would once again held a three-point lead, 58-55, with 2:36 left in the game.
IU would get outscored 8-3 the rest of the way as Michigan hit three of its final four shots to earn the victory.
The Hoosiers will remain on the road when they travel to Champaign, Ill., to take on the Fighting Illini on Thursday, Jan. 27 at 8:00 p.m (EST). The game can be heard locally on WHCC (105.1) with Jeremy Gray calling all of the action. Additionally, Fox Sports Net-Chicago will air the live match-up between Indiana and Illinois.
