Hoosiers Fall to Penn State, 21-12

State College, Pa. - The 17th-ranked Indiana wrestling team fell to 1-1 in Big Ten dual action with a 21-12 loss to 20th-ranked Penn State, Friday night at Recreation Hall.
The Hoosiers were led on the night by junior Joe Dubuque, redshirt-freshman Max Dean, junior Brady Richardson and senior Pat DeGain, who all posted wins for Indiana.
With the match starting at 125 pounds, Dubuque started Indiana out on a strong note as he scored a 10-6 decision over Adam Smith to give IU an early 3-0 lead. With the match tied at four in the third period, Dubuque scored a takedown and an important two-point near-fall to give him an 8-4 advantage. After a Smith escape, Dubuque recorded another takedown to give him a 10-6 lead and the match.
Penn State responded with a win at 133 pounds as redshirt-freshman Brian Dyer saw his four-match win streak snapped falling to 19th-ranked Bryan Heller, 5-1 to tie the dual at three. Penn State took its first lead of the dual at 7-3 as 12th-ranked DeWitt Driscoll defeated 12th-ranked Mike Simpson, 12-2.
At 149 pounds, Penn State extended its lead to 11-3 as Jack Decker scored a 9-0 major decision over sophomore Issac Knable.
In the second match of the night featuring ranked opponents, saw 17th-ranked Nathan Galloway score a 2-1 decision over 15th-ranked redshirt-freshman Brandon Becker at 157 pounds.
After a first period that saw neither wrestler take the offensive, the match headed into the second period tied at zero. Becker scored the first point of the match as he recorded an escape at the 1:41 mark to give him a 1-0 lead. Galloway then recorded the first takedown of the match as he took a 2-1 lead with 29 seconds remaining in the second period.
In the third period, Becker attempted numerous shots at a takedown but Galloway was able to withstand his attempts to take the match and extended Penn State's lead to 14-3.
At 165 pounds, Dean stopped the Nittany Lions four-match winning streak as he defeated Jarrad Turner, 8-5, to bring IU within eight at 14-6.
With Turner up 2-1, Dean took his first lead of the match 3-2 in the first period as he recorded an takedown with 13 seconds remaining. Dean extended his lead to 4-2 with a second period escape 15 seconds into the stanza. Dean recorded another takedown to give him a 6-2 lead. Turner cut Dean's lead to three, 6-3, with an escape late in the second period.
With Turner choosing down to start the third period, he recorded a escape at the 1:36 mark to bring the score to 6-4. Dean responded with a takedown to take an 8-4 lead with 50 seconds remaining in the third. Turner responded with an escape to bring him within three at 8-5, but it wasn't enough as Dean took the match.
Richardson improved to 14-4 on the season with his 5-3 decision over James Yonushonis at 174 pounds.
With Richardson up 3-2 in the third period, he extended his lead to 5-2, as he recorded his second takedown of the dual with 52 seconds left in the period. Yonushonis cut into Richardson's lead with an escape to make the score 5-3. Richardson withstood Yonushonis' attempts at takedowns for the remaining 30 seconds of the match.
In the final match of the night featuring ranked opponents saw Penn State extended its lead to 17-9 as junior Andy Rios lost a hard fought decision to sixth-ranked Eric Bradley, 3-2.
With Rios trailing 2-1 after the first period, he tied the match at two with an escape at the 1:25 mark in the second period. With Bradley choosing bottom to start the third period, he took a 3-2 lead with an early escape to start the stanza. The third period saw both wrestlers in a scramble, but Rios wasn't able to score a takedown as Bradley took the match.
At 197 pounds, Josh Buuck was major decisoned over14th-ranked Phil Davis, 12-4, to take the match and the dual regardless of the result of the heavyweight match.
DeGain ended the match for the Hoosiers with a 8-3 win over Joel Edward for his 23rd win of the season and 103rd of his career.
"We lost a couple of close matches." Head Coach Duane Goldman said. "We didn't wrestle good tonight at times. Joey and Pat both wrestled good for us. Tonight we lost a couple of one-point matches and that changed the outcome of the dual. Penn State is a solid team. We are hoping to go to Ohio State and get two wins."
The Hoosiers return to action on Sunday, Jan. 30 as they travel to Columbus, Ohio to take on Ohio State and Virginia at noon at the St. John Arena.
