IU Posts Wins over OSU & UVA

Against the Buckeyes, the Hoosiers won seven of 10 matches, highlighted by senior heavyweight Pat DeGain's four overtime win against 16th-ranked Kirk Nail, 8-4.
After a scoreless first period, DeGain fell behind 1-0 after a Nail escape. Later in the second period, DeGain shook off a Nail attempt at a takedown to keep the score 1-0. DeGain tied the match at one with an escape of his own early in the second period. The match went to overtime with a 1-1 score.
The two grapplers wrestled through a scoreless first minute of overtime before DeGain took his first lead of the match with an escape in the second extra stanza. Nail tied the match up at 2-2 with his own escape in the third overtime period. In the fourth and fifth overtime session, DeGain took control of the match recording a pair of escapes and a three-point near-fall for the 8-4 decision.
After junior Joe Dubuque put IU up 4-0 at 125 pounds with a major decision win over Nathan Costello, the Buckeyes got back within one at 4-3 after Brian Dyer lost a tough 5-4 decision to 16th-ranked T.J. Enright.
With IU up by one, senior Mike Simpson scored a 6-4 overtime decision over Jason Johnstone at 141 pounds. After each wrestler wrestled to a 2-2 stalemate through the second period, Simpson fell behind by one after he was called for his second stall warning. In the final stanza, Simpson took a one-point lead with a reversal with a minute left in the period. With time running out, Johnstone tied the match up at four, which forced overtime.
With 18 seconds left in the overtime period, Simpson scored the deciding takedown to take the match.
Ohio State pulled back within one as IU sophomore Isaac Knable dropped his match to Steve Wolery, 6-4 at 149 pounds. IU extended its lead after redshirt-freshman Brandon Becker scored a 9-1 major decision over Keegan Mueller at 157 pounds. Despite trailing, 6-5 in the third period, redshirt-freshman Max Dean took control with a late takedown to claim the match, 8-6 over Zach Craiglow at 165 pounds.
IU extended its lead to 17-6 after junior Brady Richardson scored an 11-8 victory over Nate Augustson at 174 pounds. IU secured the dual win as junior Andy Rios scored a major decision over Alex Picazo, 14-6 at 184 pounds.
At 197 pounds, sophomore Josh Buuck lost a heart-breaking match to fourth-ranked J.D. Bergman, 2-1. Bergman scored an a first period takedown and then was able to block Buuck's offensive attempts to hold onto the win.
In the earlier match against the Cavaliers the Hoosiers' won seven of 10 victories were highlighted by Dubuque's 20-4 technical fall over Anthony Burke at 125 pounds. In addition to Dubuque's technical fall over Burke, three other Hoosiers posted bonus point wins as Simpson scored a second period technical fall over Chet Naylor, 17-2 at 141 pounds. At 184 pounds, Rios posted his third technical fall over the year over Kyle Narkiewicz, 17-1, and Richardson recorded a 13-2 major decision over Rocco Caponi at 174 pounds.
"It was a really exciting dual." head coach Duane Goldman said. "Anytime you pick up a Big Ten road win it's good. Everbody picked up their performances today. I was really pleased with the way we wrestled."
The Hoosiers return home to take on Wisconsin on Sunday Feb. 6, at University Gym beginning at 1 p.m.
