• Indiana (7-5, 0-2) finishes off its first three-game conference road swing with a match-up against the No. 22/24 Purdue Boilermakers (8-4, 1-1) on Thursday, Jan. 6. Tip off is set for 7:00 p.m. EST and will be played at Mackey Arena in West Lafayette, Ind. The game can be heard locally on WHCC (105.1) with Jeremy Gray calling all of the action. • This will be the fourth ranked opponent Indiana has faced this season, including the third straight Big Ten opponent. IU first met up with then No. 8/8 Baylor and were defeated, 60-47 and most recently dropped two conference games, a 62-51 decision to No. 18/19 Iowa on Dec. 30 and a, 61-47, loss at No. 12/12 Minnesota on Jan. 2.
• The Boilermakers got the best of the Hoosiers last season, claiming a, 71-47, victory in its lone match-up on Jan. 25, 2004 . Purdue leads the all-time series, 34-22.
• Half a point in the Crimson and Gold Cup standings is at stake when the two teams meet up on Thursday. Purdue is currently leading the series, 3-2.
SCOUTING PURDUE
No.22/24 Purdue enters Thursday's game with a 8-4 record overall and a 1-1 mark in conference play. The Boilermakers won their Big Ten Opener over Wisconsin, 72-67 on Dec. 30 and then dropped a 60-53 decision to then-No. 9/10 Ohio State on Jan. 2.
Sophomore forward Katie Lawless (16.6 ppg) and sophomore guard Katie Geralds (13.6ppg) are the leading scorers for Purdue. Lawless also leads the Boilers in rebounding with 5.8 per game.
As a team, Purdue ranks first in the conference in field goal-percent defense (.332), which is a small advantage over the Hoosiers who rank second overall (.337). The Boilers also rank first in blocked shots with 6.25 per game.
Head Coach Kristy Curry is in the midst of her sixth season at the helm of the Purdue program. Over the last six season, Curry has compiled an overall record of 144-35 including a 65-17 mark in Big Ten games. Prior to her arrival in West Lafayette, Curry had coaching stints as an assistant at Tulane (1991-93), Stephen F. Austin (1993-94), Texas A&M (1994-96) and Louisiana Tech (1996-99)
VALENTIN ON THE VERGE OF 1,000 CAREER POINTS
Junior Cyndi Valentin is just 47 points away from becoming the 19th player in Indiana history to score 1,000 career points. Valentin has 953 career points entering Thursday's game. In the likely event she reaches the 1,000-point plateau this year, Valentin would become only the ninth player in school history to accomplish the feat in her junior year. Senior Jenny DeMuth was the last Hoosier to achieve this accomplishment when she scored her 1,000th career point last year on Feb. 19, 2004 against Michigan State.
BIG TEN SCHEDULE
The Hoosier's Big Ten opener at Iowa was the start to their first three-game road swing to begin the 2005 conference schedule. Indiana is the only conference school to have more than one three-game trip as they embark on another one in early February (at Ohio State- Feb. 6), (at Penn State- Feb. 10), (at Northwestern- Feb. 13).
HOOSIERS SCHEDULE RANKED 3rd IN SUMMERVILLE RPI POLL
With the Big Ten portion of Indiana's schedule underway, the Hoosiers' tough schedule ranks third in the nation according to the recent Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Summerville RPI Ratings (1/2/05). The Cream and Crimson have already faced three ranked teams (then-No. 8/8 Baylor on Nov. 19, then-No. 18/19 Iowa on Dec. 30 and then-No. 12/12 Minnesota on Jan. 2) and will have to prepare to take on three more ranked teams throughout the remainder of the season, all of which are conference opponents. In the overall RPI, IU ranks 19th.
