Hoosiers Fall to No. 22/24 Purdue

Junior forward Angela Hawkins scored eight points for the Hoosiers, while senior guard LeeAnn Stephenson scored seven, corralled five rebounds and had a career-high five steals.
Purdue (9-4, 2-1) jumped out to an 8-0 lead as the Hoosiers went 0-for-5 from the floor to start the game. Sophomore guard Leah Enterline got IU on the board with a steal and lay-up at 16:12, but the Boilermakers would score the next four points to lead 12-2 at 15:01.
Junior guard Cyndi Valentin connected on one free throw and Stephenson drained a tough jumper to trim the Purdue lead to 12-5 with 14:09 remaining.
The Boilermakers went on an 11-0 run over the next 6:32 to take a 23-5 lead with 8:21 to play. Stephenson stopped the spurt with a triple at 7:41, but sophomore guard Katie Gearlds answered with a jumper of her own on the Boilermakers next possession.
The Hoosiers (7-6, 0-3) picked up their defensive intensity and came to life with about five minutes to play and closed the half on a 12-2 run. During the run senior forward Jamie Gathing scored six points down in the post and Purdue failed to hit a field goal over the last 5:22 of the half, but still led 27-20 at the break.
IU mis-fired from the floor during the first half shooting 9-for-24 (26.5%).
Purdue opened the second half, similar to how it began the first half, with an 8-2 run, to lead 34-22 at 14:30. Sophomore guard Annika Boyd hit a running-floater in the lane, the Hoosiers first basket in 4:54, to make the score 34-24 at 13:55.
The Boilermakers maintained their double-digit lead through out the half as the Hoosiers shot 3-for-30 (10.0%) for the second frame.
Gearlds finished with a game-high 11 points, while senior center Emily Heikes shared game-high honors with 11 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Hoosiers will return to action at home for the first time since Dec. 22 when they host Northwestern on Thursday, Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. The game can be heard live on WHCC (105.1) with Jeremy Gray calling all the action.
