BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Over the 2005-06 campaign, IUHOOSIERS.com will catch up with former Indiana swimmers and divers to see where life has taken them after graduating from IU. Beth Burke, who swam for IU from 1993-96, took the time to fill in IUHOOSIERS.com on her life since graduation.
What have you been doing since graduating from Indiana University?
After a brief stint in Chicago doing financial modeling for an intellectual property consulting firm, I moved back to my hometown in the Maryland suburbs of Washington D.C. In D.C., I worked in finance and accounting and studied Kung Fu and Tai Chi, a hobby that led to an interest in traditional Chinese medicine. Currently, I am pursuing my master of acupuncture at the Tai Sophia Institute for the Healing Arts. In the last two years, I have made several trips to Costa Rica and I am learning to surf - an endeavor for which my swimming background has proved invaluable!
What did you enjoy the most about your time as a Hoosier?
I loved going to a town that was completely different from where I grew up and having the camaraderie and community of the swim team.
What piece of advice would you give to any current Hoosier?
Feed your soul! Study what interests you - your "work" will be easier and more fulfilling if you are engaged and passionate about what you are doing. Also, I would recommend studying a foreign language and if possible, studying abroad. There are so many programs out there you likely will be able to find one that fits your interests and schedule. Look into Semester at Sea.
Would you say that being a student-athlete at Indiana University has helped you get to where you are today?
Learning to surf at the age of 30 would be extremely difficult without the swimming background. The tenacity and work ethic I developed in athletics has benefited me tremendously in life, far beyond the workplace.
