BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Over the 2005-06 campaign, IUHOOSIERS.com will catch up with former Indiana swimmers and divers to see where life has taken them after graduating from IU. Larry Anspach, who swam for IU in 1973, took the time to fill in IUHOOSIERS.com on his life since graduation.
What did you enjoy the most about your time as a Hoosier?
I enjoyed all the political and social aspects of college life and being involved in IU swimming. It gave me the opportunity to travel the world and meet wonderful people that became friends to this day.
What piece of advice would you give to any current Hoosier?
At times, it may seem like an uphill battle, especially as a student-athlete. However, just try and stick in there, it is all worth it. Remember, I was the guy that wrecked Doc Counsilman's brand new BMW that he bought after the Munich Olympics and shipped over here. I think it was here a few weeks before I rear-ended a pick-up truck. Doc took it so well, however, at the time I felt like running away.
Would you say that being a student-athlete at Indiana University has helped you get to where you are today?
I always feel that school athletics helps broaden an individual. It certainly is a good opener when you are trying to start a conversation or close a sale that you swam with the famous Mark Spitz and helped tutor him in Spanish.
Anything else you would like to add?
It was heart warming to be with all the old friends that were involved in IU swimming when I attended Doc's memorial service. It really brought back great memories, especially how Doc and his family made us feel like we were at home with all their home dinners and mother and father figures to the team as well as coach. There has been so much tragedy in their family, especially with Brian's death earlier this year. Their family should be an inspiration to others.
