BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Over the 2005-06 campaign, IUHOOSIERS.com will catch up with former Indiana swimmers and divers to see where life has taken them after graduating from IU. Anne Williams, who swam for IU from 2000-03, took the time to fill in IUHOOSIERS.com on her life since graduation.
What have you been doing since graduating from Indiana University?
I have been in grad school for sport administration. I plan to get my degree in December. In the meantime, I have taken a full-time job at Oakland University (Mich.) as the compliance assistant.
What did you enjoy the most about your time as a Hoosier?
My teammates, definitely. Nothing could have forced the chemistry we had. It just clicked...with all of us. I wouldn't have traded anyone on that team for another. I miss that network now.
What piece of advice would you give to any current Hoosier?
Listen to your coaches: they know what they're talking about even when you think they don't...Don't put too much pressure on ANY competition: five years, one year, even six months after your time as an athlete, the time you swam and the place you finished won't matter! Finally, enjoy the family of a team you have while you are there. Nothing else you experience will even come close.
Would you say that being a student-athlete at Indiana University has helped you get to where you are today?
Most definitely. I have gained more perspective, work ethic and integrity from the program at IU than I ever could have gained from being a part of the normal student body. Time management, leadership, commitment: these types of qualities are not only encouraged as a student-athlete, but are necessities to survive. Hence, in "life after swimming," these things are ingrained and automatic.
Anything you would like to add?
My experience at IU is by far the best thing I have ever done.
