Crimson Knocks Off Cream, 301.5-297.5

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - In the initial meet as a merged squad, the Indiana swimming and diving team held a combined-point Cream vs. Crimson intrasquad meet at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington, Ind., on Oct. 7. In the end, the Crimson had just enough big performances to pull out a 301.5-297.5 triumph.
In the opening event of the intrasquad meet, the Cream jumped out to a 13-4 lead as junior Leila Vaziri, freshman Kelly Morris, freshman Kristin Cihoski and junior Annica Lofstedt won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:46.73. Crimson's quartet of senior Sarah Bugden, freshman Sarah Stockwell, freshman Allison Kay and freshman Abby Cooper took second in 1:47.62. Meanwhile, Cream's contingent of junior Susanna Ernst, freshman Kristy Winck, sophomore Lauren Schrader and junior Clarissa Wentworth took third in 1:50.73.
In the men's 200-yard medley relay, the Cream pushed its lead to 26-8 as sophomore Ben Hesen, senior Hank Baldwin, senior Thomas Clavier and sophomore Todd Patrick finished first in 1:31.92. Additionally, Crimson's team of senior Mike Jones, sophomore Ronnie Hehn, junior Scott Tanner and junior Colin Russell placed second in 1:35.84. The Cream squad of freshman Jeff Wood, freshman A.J. Miller, sophomore Nick Walkotten and junior Ryan Millard took third in 1:36.35.
The Cream extended its lead to 39-14 in the women's 1,000-yard freestyle. Senior Lauren Torpey won the event in 10:18.21, while sophomore Christie Fuchs finished second in 10:38.91 and freshman Megan Lonergan took third in 10:50.93.
In the men's side of the distance free, the Cream moved out to a 43-29 lead. Senior Sergiy Fesenko captured the crown in 9:31.42, while John Kevin Koehler finished second in 9:33.71 and sophomore Alex Brunfeldt touched in third with a 9:38.94.
In the women's 200-yard freestyle, Cream held on to a 51.5-39.5 lead. Junior Clarissa Wentworth and senior Kristen Bradley tied with matching 1:53.16's, while senior Doherty Colgin finished third in 1:53.33.
In the men's 200-yard freestyle, junior Lee Houchin won the event in 1:44.98 as the Crimson dominated to take a 55.5-54.5 lead. Crimson teammates Koehler (1:46.19) and junior Paul Sigfusson (1:46.63) placed second and third, respectively.
In the women's 100-yard backstroke, Cream countered to take a 68.5-60.5 lead. Vaziri claimed the title in 57.64, while Bugden touched second in 58.51 and Ernst took third in 1:00.10.
In the men's 100-yard backstroke, the Cream extended its lead to 81.5-66.5. Sophomore Ben Hesen clocked a 49.93 for first, while freshman George Grcevich took second in 52.22 and Wood placed third in 53.38.
In the women's 100-yard breaststroke, Stockwell took first in 1:06.34. Meanwhile, Cooper finished second in 1:06.47 and Winck took third in 1:08.08. At the end of the event, Cream held on to an 84.5-82.5 lead.
In the men's 100-yard breaststroke, the Crimson rebounded to take a 94.5-91.5 lead. Russell placed first in 56.73, while senior Hank Baldwin took second in 58.03 and Hehn finished third in 58.85.
In the women's 200-yard butterfly, the Crimson stretched its lead to 106.5-98.5 as Kay won in 2:06.15. Fuchs touched in second in 2:07.94, while Bugden placed third in 2:11.29.
In the men's 200-yard butterfly, Crimson maintained a 118.5-104.5 buffer as Fesenko clocked a first-place 1:57.56. Meanwhile, junior Ryan McNeill finished second in 2:00.60 and freshman Keith Dawley placed third in 2:01.05.
In the women's 50-yard freestyle, the Crimson continued to lead 125.5-116.5. Lofstedt claimed the crown in 23.84, while Cooper took second in 24.53 and freshman Abbey Mitchell came in third in 25.91.
In the men's 50-yard freestyle, the Cream responded to take a 131.5-129.5 lead. Patrick touched first in 20.54, while Houchin finished second in 21.09 and Millard placed third in 22.29.
In the women's 100-yard freestyle, Cream pushed its lead to 143.5-136.5. Vaziri finished first in 52.77, while Colgin took second in 53.79 and Cooper placed third in 54.12.
In the men's 100-yard freestyle, the Crimson countered to take a 151.5-147.5 lead. Russell placed first in 45.25, while Houchin placed second in 46.96 and Walkotten touched third in 47.07.
In the women's 200-yard backstroke, the Crimson maintained a 161.5-156.5 lead as Bugden claimed the title in 2:04.32. Meanwhile, Ernst placed second in 2:09.26, while Torpey finished third in 2:17.22.
In the men's 200-yard backstroke, the Cream battled back for a 169.5-167.5 lead. Hesen finished first in 1:50.95, while Jones touched second in 1:52.78 and freshman Jeff Wood placed third in 2:00.68.
In the women's 200-yard breaststroke, the Crimson bounced back for a 181.5-174.5 lead. Stockwell snared the title in 2:24.00, while Winck finished second in 2:25.04 and freshman Mary Elizabeth Miller placed third in 2:25.64.
In the men's 200-yard breaststroke, the Crimson held on to a 190.5-184.5 lead as Baldwin won in 2:06.27. Additionally, sophomore Alec Haley took second in 2:06.54 and Hehn finished third in 2:09.71.
In the women's 500-yard freestyle, the Crimson moved out to a 202.5-191.5 lead. Bradley (5:00.00) out-touched Torpey (5:00.02) for the title, while Colgin wound up in third in 5:09.13.
In the men's 500-yard freestyle, the Crimson extended its lead to 218.5-194.5 as Fesenko blazed to the finish in 4:39.84. Koehler finished second in 4:42.39, while Sigfusson took third in 4:42.93.
In the women's 100-yard butterfly, the Crimson held on to a 222.5-209.5 buffer as Lofstedt captured the crow in 56.58, while Kay placed second in 57.09 and Cihoski touched in third in 57.56.
In the men's 100-yard butterfly, Cream cut the lead to 228.5-222.5. Clavier posted a first-place time of 50.86, while Walkotten finished second in 51.38, while Dawley placed third in 54.33.
Diving points were then added into the equation with Crimson jumping ahead 272.5-254.5.
In the women's one-meter, junior Lindsay Weigle captured the crown with a 278.63, while senior Lisa Silvestri placed second with a 264.98 and sophomore Jade Summerlin rounded out the top three with a 241.35.
In the men's one-meter, sophomore Taylor Roberts claimed the title with a 322.35, while senior Jesse Rappaport took second with a 285.08 and sophomore transfer Justin Montrie finished third with a 281.40.
Weigle made it a clean sweep with a win in the three-meter with a 295.35. Meanwhile, sophomore Ashley Greene placed second with a 239.28 and senior Heather Chapman finished third with a 230.18.
In the men's three-meter, senior Ryan Fagan picked up the crown with a 367.50, while Roberts took second with a 326.25 and Rappaport finished third with a 295.88.
In the women's 200-yard IM, Crimson maintained a 286.5-259.5 lead when Bradley snared the title in 2:05.84. Meanwhile, Kay placed second in 2:07.89, while Ernst claimed third in 2:09.43.
In the men's 200-yard IM, Patrick raced to the win in 1:53.83, while Jones finished second in 1:55.06 and Miller placed third in 1:55.92. At the end of the event, the Crimson remained in the lead, 293.5-271.5
In the women's 200-yard freestyle relay, the Cream mounted a comeback to cut the lead to 297.5-284.5. The Cream team of Vaziri, Cihoski, Wentworth and Lofstedt won in 1:36.28, while the Crimson's squad of junior Meghan Keefer, Colgin, Mitchell and Bradley finished second in 1:41.13.
The Cream could not overcome the deficit in the men's 200-yard freestyle relay, however, as the Crimson won 301.5-297.5. Cream's contingent of Clavier, Hesen, Walkotten and Patrick captured the crown in 1:23.91, while Crimson's quartet of Russell, Houchin, Fesenko and Hehn placed second in 1:23.99.
Next up, the Hoosiers head to Auburn, Ala., to battle the Tigers on Oct. 14 at 6:30 p.m.
