BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Over the 2005-06 campaign, IUHOOSIERS.com will catch up with former Indiana swimmers and divers to see where life has taken them after graduating from IU. Kim Holmes, who swam for IU from 1984-87, took the time to fill in IUHOOSIERS.com on her life since graduation.
What have you been doing since graduating from Indiana University?
After six years of teaching elementary school and 13 years of coaching (age group in Bloomington and Carmel, high school in Richmond and college at the University of Tennessee), I've been at USA Swimming for the last five years. I'm a Sport Development Consultant, traveling all over the Western part of the U.S. meeting with local swim clubs. I work with the parent boards, coaches and parent groups on how to improve swimming and the club environment.
What did you enjoy the most about your time as a Hoosier?
My teammates. We are still great friends. I also was so proud to wear the IU team apparel and represent the university. Christmas training trips to Hawaii were pretty cool, too!
What piece of advice would you give to any current Hoosier?
Take advantage of every opportunity available to you while at the University! Enjoy all the challenges, and appreciate the experiences. Go to the opera, the ballet, soccer games (do you still get free bagels if it's a shutout???), women's basketball (going to the men's games is a given. It's Indiana Basketball! Go to the women's games, too!), Little 500, etc. You won't have all these opportunities so easily available after you graduate.
As a team member, be good to each other. Keep the traditions and team history alive, and figure out how you can contribute to the future of the program.
Would you say that being a student-athlete at Indiana University has helped you get to where you are today?
Absolutely! Being a student-athlete made it easier to have a group of friends to identify with immediately when arriving on campus as a freshman. That set each of us up to be more successful right away. The experience as an athlete opened doors for me as a coach after graduating, and being involved with swimming is still my life!

Thanks for this opportunity! I have such great memories of Bloomington/IU, and will always think of life there warmly!!!
