BLOOMINGTON, Ind.-- Five Hoosiers scored in double figures to lead the Indiana women's basketball team to a commanding 114-45 victory over Brescia University in its final exhibition game of the season on Saturday night at Branch McCracken Court at Assembly Hall.
"We had some goals for this game and we actually met a majority of these," head coach Sharon Versyp said. "Our free throw percentage is the only thing we didn't meet very well but we know that this will change. We are just really excited about all of the excitement right now on our team."
Senior Cyndi Valentin notched a game-high 27 points, including a 4-of-6 clip from three-point range. Freshman Whitney Thomas also fared well, contributing 14 points, seven rebounds and seven of IU's 21 steals on the night. Senior Angela Hawkins collected 19 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, while senior Jenny DeMuth and sophomore Nikki Smith pitched in with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Indiana dominated from the opening tip, jumping out to an early 26-9 lead midway through the first half of action. The Hoosier continued to roll, going on a 17-2 run to close out the opening half and go up by 44 points at 66-22 at the break.
The Hoosiers scorched the nets in the opening 20 minutes, hitting 24-of-36 shots, including 4-of-6 from behind the arc, for 66.7 percent.
The second half was no different as the Hoosiers outscored the Bearcats 48-23, including shooting 53.3 percent from the floor.
Sarah McDaniel led the Bearcats in scoring with 15 points- the only Brescia player to reach double-digits.
IU out-rebounded Brescia, 44-27, but the Hoosier defense was the shining point. In addition, the Hoosiers held the Bearcats to only 31.3 shooting in the contest, while forcing 32 turnovers and collecting 21 steals on the evening.
The Hoosiers begin their regular season against the defending national champion No. 6/7 Baylor Lady Bears on Saturday, Nov. 19 at Assembly Hall. Tip off is set for 6 p.m. and will follow the IU vs. Purdue football game slated for 1 p.m. The game can be heard on WHCC 105.1 with Jeremy Gray calling all the action.
