IU Grapplers Bring Home Five Top-Five Finishes

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana wrestling squad, led by freshman Angel Escobedo with the 133-pound tournament title, brought home a handful of honors at the Michigan State Open on Nov. 12-13 in East Lansing, Mich. Sophomore Blane Culp (125) and senior Brady Richardson (194) competed for Indiana, while sophomore Dave Herman (HWT) and Escobedo, freshmen Matt Coughlin (157), Hunter Hughes (165) and Trevor Perry (174) entered the competition unattached.
Culp finished eighth at the event posting a 3-3 outing, while Escobedo allowed only nine points en route to his first career tournament title. Entering the competition as the top-rated grappler in the 133-pound competitor field, the Griffith, Ind., native went 4-0 to claim the crown.
Coughlin went 5-2 to claim a fifth-place finish at the open, registering two falls en route to the solid effort. Hughes compiled a 1-2 record before falling in the second round of the consolation bracket.
Perry looked for his second tournament title in as many tries after completing a fourth-place effort. The Davison, Mich., native went 5-2 with two pins in the outing to fall just short of his second title.
Richardson, in his first competition at 197 pounds after qualifying for the NCAA tournament at 174 a year ago, took third at the event. Richardson looked strong in his debut allowing only seven points en route to the bronze finish.
Herman rounded out the unattached tandem with a fourth-place finish. Herman posted commanding wins early in the competition as he went 3-1 before having to retire in the bronze medal match due to injury.
Indiana will open its season on Nov. 12 at the Missouri Open in Columbia, Mo.
