HOOSIER HEADLINES
Indiana (1-2) will look to capture its sixth-straight home tournament title when it takes on Bowling Green (3-0) in the championship game of the Hampton Inn Classic tonight, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. The Hoosiers are coming off a, 74-38, win over Youngstown State on Friday, and the Falcons defeated IUPUI, 66-55 to advance to the title game.
Youngstown State and IUPUI will battle it out for third place in the consolation game set for 4:30 p.m. tonight.
First-year head coach Sharon Versyp is one win away from claiming her 100th victory. She has compiled an overall record of 99-53 during her five years as a head coach.
BOWLING GREEN AT A GLANCE
The 2005 Mid-American Conference Tournament Champions, Bowling Green is 3-0 on the year with its most recent win coming against IUPUI, 66-55 in the first round of the Hampton Inn Classic on Friday. Bowling Green finished the season 22-8 in 2005 after being knocked out in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by Kansas State.
The Falcons have a strong experienced crew back from 2004-05, including junior Liz Honegger, who was the lone Falcon to start all 31 games last season and led the team in scoring (14.5), rebounding (8.1) and blocked shots (1.6). Also leading the charge is junior Ali Mann, a preseason All-MAC Team selection for the second consecutive year and sophomore Kate Achter, who was a member of the MAC's All-Freshman Team and earned MVP of the 2005 Kraft MAC Tournament after helping the Falcons to the title. Honegger is averaging 16.0 ppg, while Mann and Achter Flynn are putting up 14.0 and 11.0 ppg, respectively.
Curt Miller is in his fifth season at the helm of the Bowling Green State University women's basketball program and has an overall record of 68-53 and a MAC ledger of 35-29. Miller joined the Falcons after spending three years as the associate head coach at Colorado State University. He also spent time as an assistant coach at Syracuse University and Cleveland State University.
WHAT IT MEANS
An Indiana win would...
Mark its sixth-straight home tournament title
Mark head coach Sharon Versyp's 100th career victory, putting her overall record at 100-53.
Give the Hoosiers a 4-0 advantage in the all-time series against Bowling Green
Hand the Falcons their first loss of the season
MOVING ON UP
Seniors Jenny DeMuth, Angela Hawkins, Cyndi Valentin and junior Sarah McKay have already etched their names and are on the rise in the IU record books this season.
Valentin is on track to move into the top-five all-time scoring list in her final season with the Hoosiers. The Bloomington, Ind., native currently sits at 11th overall in the all-time scoring list with 1,201 points.
DeMuth is not too far behind her, sitting in at No. 15 with 1,124 career points. DeMuth also sits at third in free throw attempts (505), fourth in free-throws made (375), and sixth in steals (170).
In addition, Hawkins and McKay are up and coming on Indiana's all-time blocked shot lists with 91 and 81, respectively. Hawkins also ranks 10th in career rebounding (619). To the right is a tracking of all of these student-athletes in their respective categories.
DOUBLE UP
When senior Jenny DeMuth (20 points, 11 rebounds), and freshman Whitney Thomas ( 14 points, 12 rebounds) notched double-doubles against then-No. 13/15 Notre Dame, it marked the first time since the 2002-03 season that two Hoosiers contributed double-doubles. Ironically, DeMuth (15 points, 11 rebounds) was part of that along with senior Angela Hawkins (10 points, 13 rebounds). The feat happened on Nov. 26, 2002 against Eastern Kentucky.
UNDER 40
The Hoosiers held Youngstown State to just 38 points in the first round of the Hampton Inn Classic, something they hadn't done since last year's home tournament when they held Central Michigan to just 32 points on Nov. 28, 2004.
FRESHMAN SENSATION
Freshman forward Whitney Thomas has not let first-game jitters get to her in IU's first few games. She currently leads the team in rebounding (8.3 rpg) and ranks third on the team in scoring (8.0 ppg). Most recently, she recorded a double-double of 14 points, 12 rebounds against the Notre Dame on Nov. 23 and, despite fouling out with 10 minutes left in the game against Baylor, Thomas still managed to be productive, scoring six points and grabbing five rebounds. The Bloomington, Ind., native has started in all three of IU's games this season and has the potential to break some freshman school records.
NEXT GAME
After four-straight home games, Indiana will finally hit the road for its first away game of the season when it travels to Nashville, Tenn., to take on the Belmont Bruins on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. The game can be heard locally on WHCC 105.1 with Jeremy Gray calling all the action.
