Where Are They Now? - Debbie Lipski

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Over the 2005-06 campaign, IUHOOSIERS.com will catch up with former Indiana swimmers and divers to see where life has taken them after graduating from IU. Debbie Lipski, who dove for IU from 1994-99, took the time to fill in IUHOOSIERS.com on her life since graduation.
What have you been doing since graduating from Indiana University?
Since graduating from Indiana University in 1999, I moved to Colorado to pursue a career as a massage therapist. I graduated from the Boulder College of Massage Therapy in 2001 and now have my own practice here in Boulder. Since becoming a therapist, I have had the opportunity to work with several athletes from Monica Seles to members of the Colorado Rapids pro soccer team.
In addition to running my own private practice, I travel as a full-time soigneur with the Health Net/Maxxis pro cycling team (the #1 U.S. team in 2005). I love this job and particularly enjoy the extensive travel in North and South America and Europe.
In my spare time, I've been training and competing in sprint distance triathlons while working towards racing longer distances in the future.
What did you enjoy the most about your time as a Hoosier?
I enjoyed being a member of the IU diving team, and how supportive we all were of each other. The team was like my family away from home. We were all serious about the sport, yet that never stopped us from having a good time no matter where we were or what we were doing.
What piece of advice would you give to any current Hoosier?
I would say make the most of your time at IU. You don't ever want to look back and say "If only I had...". Also, remember to have fun doing what you're doing and don't take yourself too seriously.
Would you say that being a student-athlete at Indiana University has helped you get to where you are today?
My life as a student-athlete taught me a great deal about goal setting and self-discipline. These skills and the support of others allowed me to accomplish more than I ever imagined possible both as a student and a collegiate diver.
Today, I apply these same skills in my career and personal life. This has afforded me a rewarding and contented life with everything I've wanted up to this point.
Anything additional you would like to add?
Thanks to Coach Jeff Huber and the ('94-'99) men's and women's diving team for five wonderful years. I still have a special place in my heart for all of you. Hope you are all well.
