Indiana Hosts North Florida in Final Nonconference Game

HOOSIER HEADLINES
• For the first time in six games, Indiana (5-5) will play at home on the Branch McCracken Court at Assembly Hall on Tuesday, Dec. 20, against its final non-conference opponent of the season, the University of North Florida (2-5). Tipoff time is set for 7 p.m. (EST). The game can be heard locally on WHCC-FM 105.1 with Jeremy Gray calling all the action. Fans can also follow the game on Gametracker at IUHOOSIERS.com
• IU has not played a home game at all in the month of December, and returns to the court for the first time since Nov. 26, when it lost to Bowling Green, 68-50, in the championship game of the Hampton Inn Classic.
• This will be the first meeting between IU and North Florida.
SCOUTING NORTH FLORIDA
The University of North Florida enters Tuesday's game with a 2-5 overall record. UNF is in its first year as a Division 1 school. The Ospreys most recently defeated Bethune-Cookman, 47-45, on Friday, Dec. 16. Prior to that victory, UNF had dropped five-straight games.
Senior forward Jackie Beik leads the way for the North Florida, as she averages 8.6 ppg. Behind her is junior forward Andrea Dill (7.4 ppg), and senior guard Alana Mountfield (7.0 ppg). Beik also leads the Ospreys in rebounding with 6.7 rpg.
North Florida head coach Mary Tappmeyer is in her 14th season at the helm of the UNF ship. She is the only coach in the history of UNF women's basketball, compiling a 208-166 record since starting the program in 1992. Tappmeyer guided the Lady Ospreys to back-to-back appearances in the Division II NCAA Tournament in 2003 and 2004, winning a regional title and making an appearance in the Elite 8 in 2003. Before coming to UNF, Tappmeyer spent seven seasons at Missouri-Rolla.

An Indiana win would...
• Mark its second at home this season
• Move its record to above .500 for the second time this season (6-5)
• Give the Hoosiers a 1-0 advantage in the all-time series against the Ospreys
THE STREAK STARTS AGAIN
Already the school record holder (men or women) for consecutive free throws made (48), senior Cyndi Valentin is at it again, as she has made 28-straight shots from the foul line this season, which currently ranks third in the record books. Most recently, she went 11-for-11 from the line against Boston University on Dec. 10, which is the second-highest effort for the senior guard. Valentin went 12-for-12 last year against Maine on Dec. 10, 2004. The Bloomington, Ind., native ranks seventh in the nation in free throw percentage with an average of .957 (44-for-46).
DEMUTH NEARS SCHOOL RECORD
Highland, Ind., native Jenny DeMuth is just 22 free throws shy of breaking the school record in career-free throws. She has 422 made during her career. The current record (443) is held by Denise Jackson, who played for the Hoosiers from 1981-84.
DOMINATING THE DEFENSIVE BOARDS
Thanks to the help of Jenny DeMuth (5.30 per game), Angela Hawkins (4.20 per game) and Whitney Thomas (4.60 per game), the Hoosiers rank third in defensive rebounds in the conference, with 27.70 per contest. Last season IU finished seventh in the Big Ten with 24.21 defensive rebounds per contest.
VITAL VALENTIN
Not only does senior guard Cyndi Valentin lead IU in scoring (17.7), but she also ranks first on the team in assists (3.5) and steals (1.7) per game.
Only two other Hoosiers have finished as the team's leader in points, assists and steals. Diann Nestel finished the 1977-78 season with 13.3 points, 1.7 assists, and 1.9 steals, while Karna Abram led the 1986-87 squad with 23.3 points, 4.1 assists, and 1.3 steals per game.
DOUBLE VISION
Senior Jenny DeMuth (three) and freshman Whitney Thomas (two) have each recorded more than one double-double this season, making them one of the 10 conference players to register more than one double-double this
season.
Earlier in the season, DeMuth had two consecutive double doubles against Southern Illinois (Dec. 2) and Louisville (Dec. 4). She put up 13 points, 14 rebounds against Southern Illinois on Dec. 2 and 19 points, 13 rebounds vs. Louisville on Dec. 4.
When analyzing double-doubles, DeMuth leads the team with 13 total in her career, which ranks tied for eighth in the school record books.
Hawkins is second on the team with 10. Her most recent double-double (12 points, 16 rebounds) came against Boston University on Dec. 10. Denise Jackson holds the school record for the most in a career with 63.
ROAD WARRIORS
With three wins on the road this year, the Hoosiers have already matched their total road wins from last season. The single-season record for road wins is nine, which was set in 1978-79, and IU last won five road games during the 2000-01 season.
MOVING ON UP
Seniors Jenny DeMuth, Angela Hawkins, Cyndi Valentin and junior Sarah McKay have already etched their names and are on the rise in the IU record books this season.
Valentin, who already holds the school and Big Ten record for career free-throw percentage (.882), is also on track to finish her career among the top-five scorers in IU history. The Bloomington, Ind., native currently sits at ninth overall in the all-time scoring list with 1,337 points.
DeMuth is not too far behind her, sitting in at No. 12 with 1,234 career points. DeMuth also sits at second in free throw attempts (562), second in free-throws made (422), fourth in steals (179) and eighth in blocked shots (69). The Highland, Ind., native needs just 22 free throws to become IU's all-time leader in career free-throws made.
In addition, Hawkins and McKay are up and coming on Indiana's all-time blocked shot lists with 100 and 81, respectively. Hawkins also ranks seventh in career rebounding (670).
LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE
Despite falling to Cincinnati on Saturday, Dec. 17, the Hoosiers still took away some positives from the game. Heading into the matchup,
the Bearcats held the nations largest rebounding margin (+17.7) and had outrebounded all of their opponents by double-digits. IU put a stop to this streak, as they outrebounded UC, 36-33.
HAWKINS HITS 100 BLOCKS
Senior Angela Hawkins recorded her 100th career block on Saturday, Dec. 17 again Cincinnati. She became just the fifth player in school history to accomplish such a feat. Quacy Barnes (269), Jill Chapman (197), Denise Jackson (135) and Sue Hodges (126) are the only other Hoosiers to record over 100 blocks during their career.
