Indiana Adds Ashley Jones to Impressive Signee Haul

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana head coach Ray Looze and the Indiana University swimming and diving program announced the signing of Ashley Jones (Joliet, Ill./Minooka Community) for the 2006-07 academic year. She joins Presley Bard (Napa, Calif./Napa), Brittany Barwegen (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior), Emma Berry (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwestern), Emily Lanteigne (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North), Cassie Luhrsen (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township), Emily Porteous (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central), Alyssa Rosinko (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) and Amilee Smith (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) as part of the incoming class of 2006.
"Ashley Jones is one of the best recruits in the country," Looze said. "To have her come here over Auburn was an honor. She is a top backstroker and IMer and probably has one of the best underwater kickouts we have seen in a long time."
A 13-time YMCA national champion with two YMCA national records in the 200 IM and 400 IM, Jones also is an Olympic Trial Qualifier. Additionally, Jones placed seventh in the 200 back and 14th in the 400 IM at the ConocoPhillips Spring Nationals in 2004. Meanwhile, Jones owns eight Illinois state records and 13 U.S. Swimming Top-16 National times. Furthermore, Jones posted state finalist performances all four years as a prep. As a senior, she placed seventh in both the 100 back and 200 IM. In her junior season, Jones won the 200 IM title and finished third in the 500 freestyle. As a sophomore, she earned runner-up status in the 200 IM and took third in the 100 back. During her maiden campaign, she touched seventh in the 100 back.
"I chose Indiana because it was a good swim team with good coaches," Jones said. "The swim team is very close, and they seem like a family. It is also a very good academic school with a beautiful campus."
Away from the pool, the daughter of Lori and Dean Jones earned scholar-athlete honors at Minooka Community. She also served as a peer tutor for the Reach Program, which helps special need students.
