Hoosiers On the Road Again to Take on Cardinals

HOOSIER HEADLINES
• Indiana (3-3) looks for its third-straight road win of the season when it travels to Louisville, Ky., to take on the Louisville Cardinals (3-1) on Sunday, Dec. 4 at 1 p.m. (EST). The game can be heard locally on WHCC 105.1 with Jeremy Gray calling all the action. Fans can also follow the game on Gametracker.
• The Hoosiers, who are coming off two-straight road wins over Belmont and Southern Illinois, have not won three-straight road games since the 2000-01 season.
• IU leads the all-time series with the Cardinals, 7-2. The two teams met up last season with Indiana escaping with a 61-57 win on Dec. 3, 2004 in Bloomington.
WHAT IT MEANS
An Indiana win would...
• Mark its third-straight road win of the season, which the Hoosiers haven't done since the 2000-01 season.
• Give the Hoosiers an 8-2 advantage in the all-time series against Louisville
•Mark its first win in Louisville since the 1985-86 season
• Be the Hoosiers first win over a BIG EAST opponent since Dec. 7, 2003 when they defeated Georgetown, 72-62.
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS
Louisville, one of the new members of the BIG EAST Conference, owns a 3-1 record heading into Sunday's game against the Hoosiers. It most recently dropped a 71-61 decision to Western Kentucky on Tuesday, Nov. 29. The Cardinals are receiving votes in the latest (Nov. 29) ESPN/USA Today Poll.
A very tall Louisville squad, the Cardinals have 10 players that are 6-0 or taller. Junior forwards Jazz Covington, and Missy Taylor lead the way in scoring as they both average 11.5 ppg. Taylor also averages a team-high 9.0 rebounds.
Tom Collen is in the midst of his third year with the Louisville women's basketball program. He guided the Cardinals to a 22-9 record last season, including an 11-3 mark in conference play. Prior to is arrival in Louisville, Collen was the head coach of Colorado State from 1997-2002. Collen also has ties to the Big Ten as he served as an assistant coach for Purdue from 1986-1992. He has compiled an overall record of 152-44.
LOUISVILLE TIES
Assistant Coach Martin Clapp has ties to the University of Louisville as he served as the head coach of the Cardinals from 1997-2003. He finished his six-year stint with an overall record of 108-73. Clapp and his wife, Sara White were co-head coaches from 1997-2000, before Clapp took over as sole head coach in 2000. He was named Conference USA Coach of the Year in 2001 after leading the team to the C-USA regular season championship.
In addition, head coach Sharon Versyp also spent time at Louisville. She served as an assistant under Clapp from 1996-97. The Cardinals were 20-9 that year, sharing the Conference USA regular season crown and earning a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
MOVING ON UP
Seniors Jenny DeMuth, Angela Hawkins, Cyndi Valentin and junior Sarah McKay have already etched their names and are on the rise in the IU record books this season.
Valentin is on track to move into the top-five all-time scoring list in her final season with the Hoosiers. The Bloomington, Ind., native currently sits at 11th overall in the all-time scoring list with 1,259 points.
DeMuth is not too far behind her, sitting in at No. 13 with 1,171 career points. DeMuth also sits at second in free throw attempts (526), third in free-throws made (394), and tied for fifth in steals (172).
In addition, Hawkins and McKay are up and coming on Indiana's all-time blocked shot lists with 95 and 81, respectively. Hawkins also ranks 10th in career rebounding (636).
FEELING IT FROM THE FREE THROW LINE
Head Coach Sharon Versyp has stressed the importance of getting to the free throw line and connecting on these opportunities all season long. The Hoosiers have been productive from the charity stripe through its first five games, as they have gone 92-120 (.767). This number ranks first in the conference among other Big Ten teams.
