BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Over the 2005-06 campaign, IUHOOSIERS.com will catch up with former Indiana swimmers and divers to see where life has taken them after graduating from IU. Charlene Hernandez, who swam for IU in 1999 and served as team manager from 2000-02, took the time to fill in IUHOOSIERS.com on her life since graduation.
What have you been doing since graduating from Indiana University?
Since graduating from Indiana in 2002 from the Kelley School of Business, I accepted a job with Procter & Gamble in brand management. Since being there, I have worked on brands such as Cheer & Febreze. Most recently, I was promoted to Brand Manager in our Household Care Professional Division. On a personal note, I became engaged this summer to a wonderful guy from Ohio, Jason Butcher. We will be getting married in the fall of 2006. I still swim from time to time and hope that someday, when I have a less hectic schedule, I can teach swimming lessons.
What did you enjoy the most about your time as a Hoosier?
1. Meeting such diverse people and making life-long friends.
2. Being part of a team that improved and reached new heights.
3. Being part of a school with a lot of history and tradition.
What piece of advice would you give to any current Hoosier?
It is all about balance. Whatever you do, make sure you make time for yourself. It has definitely kept me grounded and sane.
Would you say that being a student-athlete at Indiana University has helped you get to where you are today?
Although I only swam for one year, being a student-athlete at Indiana really taught be a lot. It taught me how to balance my workload, work through tough situations and be a team player. What is interesting is that when it came time for interviews, it was my involvement in the swim team that sparked the most questions from the interviewers. They were very impressed by the skills I had gained.
