Vaziri Named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After claiming five event titles, including four NCAA provisional times, in a 211-158 loss to No. 14 Penn State Jan. 28-29, sophomore Leila Vaziri garnered Big Ten Swimmer of the Week recognition for the week of Feb. 1.
"The award is pretty well deserved," head coach Dorsey Tierney said. "It is a good stepping-stone for her championship season. The goal now is to get a little bit better every week and she seems to be following that plan."
Vaziri claimed her first conference swimmer of the week accolade and her second career certificate after winning CollegeSwimming.com National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week on Jan. 24. Her individual victories came in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events as she touched first in B-cut times of 55.13 and 2:00.76, respectively. The Coral Springs, Fla., native was also part of the 200-, 400- and 800-yard freestyle relay squads that each claimed first place finishes and swam the leadoff leg in the 200-yard medley relay (1:43.85) that finished in second.
This is Vaziri's first conference weekly honor of her career and the first for a Hoosier since Brooke Taflinger and Lindsay Weigle swept the Big Ten laurels on Oct. 22, 2003.
Next up, the Cream and Crimson play host to the 2005 Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships from Feb. 16-19 at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington, Ind.
