Fall to Illinois, 37-0

Champaign, Ill. - The 19th-ranked Indiana wrestling team dropped to 15-4 overall and 3-3 in the Big Ten with a 37-0 loss to third-ranked Illinois, Sunday afternoon in Huff Hall.
After Indiana forfeited at 125 pounds, Illinois extended its lead to 10-0 as redshirt freshman Brian Dyer fell to third-ranked Mark Jayne, 13-3, at 133 pounds.
Illinois extended its lead to 13-0 as 141-pounder Cassio Perio defeated junior Cameron Sakon, who started in place of senior and 14th-ranked Mike Simpson, 8-2. Following the Sakon loss, sophomore Marc Bennett was pinned by 12th-ranked Anton Dietzen in a time of 3:26.
At 157 pounds, redshirt freshman Brandon Becker came up short falling to third-ranked Alex Tirapelle, 4-3. After a scoreless first period, Tirapelle took the first lead of the match after recording an escape 21 seconds into the period. With 1:17 remaining in the second stanza, Becker took his first lead of the match, 2-1, on a takedown.
The lead changed again as Tirapelle scored a reversal to give him a 3-2 lead. With Becker choosing down to start the third period, he tied the match up at three with an escape with 1:05 left. The final minute saw Becker take numerous attempts at a takedown but Tirapelle took the match because he had the riding time point.
The Hoosiers lost their second close match of the dual as sophomore Marc Bennett dropped an 8-5 decision to 11th-ranked Donny Reynolds at 165 pounds. Bennett jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a takedown with 2:21 left in the period, before Reynolds countered with a reversal to tied the match up at two.
Reynolds took his first lead of the match with an escape with 1:15 left to give him a 3-2 lead. He then added a takedown with 28 seconds left in the second period to extend his lead to 5-2. Bennett cut the lead to one with a takedown to make the score 5-4 with 1:22 left in the final period. Reynolds countered with a reversal to take a 7-4 lead with 52 seconds left. After a Bennett escape to make the score 7-5, he wasn't able to take Reynolds down in the final 34 seconds.
Illinois extended its lead to 28-0 as junior Brady Richardson saw his seven match winning streak snapped as he fell to fourth-ranked Pete Friedl 7-1 at 174 pounds.
The Hoosiers suffered another close loss as 20th-ranked junior Andy Rios fell to third-ranked Brian Glynn, 4-3 at 184 pounds.
After a scoreless first period in which both grapplers were called for stalling, Glynn took the first lead, recording an escape at the 1:24 mark of the first period.
With Rios trialing by one heading into the third period, he tied the match up with an escape eight seconds into the final period. Rios then took his first lead of the match after Glynn was given his second stall warning with 1:42 left. Glynn regained the lead at 3-2 after he scored the matches only takedown with 41 seconds left in the period. He extended his lead to 4-2 after Rios was given his second stall warning of the match. Rios cut the lead to one at 4-3 recording an escape with four seconds left, but wasn't able to get the needed takedown.
Following the tough loss at 184 pounds. the Hoosiers dropped another one-point loss as sophomore Josh Buuck lost to ninth-ranked Tyrone Byrd, 3-2, at 197 pounds. With Buuck up 2-1, Byrd tied the match at two with an escape at the 1:58 mark in the third period. Byrd took the match because he had acquired the riding time point.
The final match of the night saw redshirt freshman Dave Herman, who started in place of fourth-ranked Pat DeGain, fall to Mike Behnke, 3-2 at the heavyweight position.
"We had some injuries that prevented us to be full strength against Illinois tonight," head coach Duane Goldman said.
The Hoosiers return to action on Friday, Feb. 20, when they host rival Purdue in the regular season home finale. The match is slated for 7 p.m. in University Gym.
