Iowa City, Iowa- The 18th-ranked Indiana Hoosier wrestling team saw its upset bid of ninth-ranked Iowa fall short as junior Cameron Sakon fell via major decision, 17-7 to sixth-ranked Ty Eustice at 149 pounds giving the Hawkeyes the come from behind win 17-16, Sunday afternoon at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. With the loss the Hoosiers end the regular season with a 16-5 overall record and a 4-4 conference mark.
Despite winning five matches, the most an Indiana team has won against Iowa since 1967, the Hawkeyes recorded two major decisions to Indiana's one.
With the dual starting at 157 pounds, 16th-ranked redshirt freshman Brandon Becker gave Indiana an early 3-0 lead as he upset eighth-ranked Joe Johnston, 13-12.
Johnston jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as he scored a takedown forty seconds into the match. Becker followed with a reversal to tie the match up at two. After a Johnston escape gave him a 3-2 lead with 49 seconds left, Becker scored his first takedown of the match with 27 seconds left to take a 4-3 lead.
To start the second period, Johnston chose the neutral position. He regained the lead again at 5-4 after a takedown with 1:20 left in the second period. Johnston then extended his lead to 7-4 after he recorded a two-point near fall. Becker countered the Johnston near-fall with his second reversal to cut the lead to one at 7-6.
With just under a minute left, Becker turned Johnston onto his back to record a two-point near-fall to give him an 8-7 lead. Right before the end of the second period, Becker again turned Johnston onto his back for his second two-point near-fall of the period to give him a 10-7 lead.
"Brandon's match was exciting," head coach Duane Goldman said. "It was a great win for Brandon. He wrestled him close earlier in the year and we thought he could beat him the next time."
Becker extended his lead to 11-7 after recording an escape 20 seconds into the third period. With 1:20 left in the final stanza, Johnston cut the Becker lead to two at 11-9. Becker then extended his lead to 12-9 with an escape with 1:05 left.
Johnston took Becker down again with 54 seconds left to cut the lead to 12-11. After Johnston was awarded a point for a Becker's violation, to tie the score at 12, Becker was able to break free from Johnston's hold to take a one-point lead at 13-12. Becker was then able to hold off Johnston's attempts for the final 50 seconds to take the match.
Iowa tied the dual up at three after redshirt freshman Max Dean was defeated by sixth-ranked Mark Perry via major decision, 13-2 at 165 pounds.
Indiana regained the lead, 7-4 after 16th-ranked junior Brady Richardson improved to 19-5 on the year, after defeating Oleg Polyatskiy at 174 pounds. Richardson used a five takedown attack in the win over Polyatskiy.
Iowa tied the dual up at seven after junior Andy Rios fell 12-8 to sixth-ranked Paul Bradley at 184 pounds. With the loss, Rios fell to 23-14 overall and 12-9 in dual matches.
At 197 pounds, Indiana took a three-point lead at 10-7 after redshirt freshman Justin Curran defeated Adam Fellers, 5-2.
After a scoreless first period, Curran scored the first point of the match recording an escape 23 seconds into the period. In the second period, Curran followed the escape with a takedown to take a 3-0 lead. With 45 seconds remaining in the second period, Fellers cut the lead to two, at 3-1, after an escape.
With Fellers choosing neutral to start the third period, Curran scored the deciding take down with five seconds left to give him a 5-1, lead before Fellers escaped as time expired in the match.
In a rematch of the Midlands Championship's quarterfinals saw fifth-ranked senior Pat DeGain score an 8-6 win over eighth-ranked Matt Fields, 8-6 at the heavyweight position to give IU a 13-7 lead.
DeGain jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as he recorded a takedown with 2:23 left in the opening period. After a Fields escape cut the lead to one at 2-1, DeGain extended his lead to 4-1 with a takedown with 1:17 left in the period. With under a minute remaining, Fields recoded another escape to make the score 4-2.
With Fields choosing down to start the second period, he cut DeGain's lead to one at 4-3, after an escape 13 seconds into the period. Fields took his first lead of the match, 5-4 as he recorded a takedown with 1:31 before DeGain tied the match at five with an escape with 1:25 left.
With DeGain choosing down to start the third period, he took a one-point lead on an escape with 1:42 remaining. DeGain extended his lead to 8-5 after taking down Fields with 42 seconds left. Fields, cut the lead to two with an escape with 33 seconds left in the match. DeGain was able to hold off Fields for the remaining 32 seconds to record the win.
Third ranked junior Joe Dubuque rebounded from his loss to Brandon Tucker of Purdue on Friday night to recorded a 10-3 win over Charlie Falack at 125 pounds to give IU a 16-7 lead. The win by Dubuque improved his record 21-2 overall and 18-1 in dual action.
Iowa snapped the Hoosiers three match winning streak as redshirt freshman Brian Dyer fell to 10th-ranked Mario Galanakis, 3-0 at 133 pounds bringing Iowa within six at 16-10.
Iowa cut the IU lead to three at 16-13 after 15th-ranked Alex Tsirtsis defeated 13th-ranked Mike Simpson, 5-3.
Tsirtsis jumped out to a 2-0 lead after recoding a takedown with 2:12 left. Simpson cut the lead in half after recording an escape with 26 seconds left. Tsirtsis extended his lead to 3-1, after Simpson was given his second stall warning with 10 seconds left in the second period.
Tsirtsis extended his lead to 4-1 after record at escape 29 seconds into the second period. Simpson cut the lead to one at 4-3 after recording an escape with 41 seconds left but was able to overcome the deficit as Tsirtsis took the match and the riding time point.
"I thought we wrestled well," Goldman said. "We lost by one point against Iowa, but it would have been nice to beat Iowa by one point. We need to get better and start to focus on Big Tens and the NCAA Championships. It's not discouraging, but it would have been nice to win.
The Hoosiers are off until March 5 when they travel to Iowa City, Iowa for the Big Ten Championships beginning at noon in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
