Bloomington, Ind. - This is the first of a five part series previewing each weight class for the upcoming Big Ten Championship on March 5-6 in Iowa City, Iowa at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
125- Junior Joe Dubuque (Bloomfield, N.J.)
This could be one of the top weight classes at the Big Ten Championship as five wrestlers are ranked in the top-10 according to InterMat.com. Kyle Ott of Illinois (15-2) is second, followed by IU's Joe Dubuque (21-2) at third. Nick Simmons (23-1) of Michigan State is fourth. Minnesota's Bobbe Lowe (29-5) is seventh and John Valez (14-2) of Northwestern is 10th.
Dubuque enters the championship winning 21 of 23 matches. He had a 17 match-winning streak from Dec. 12 until Feb. 12. Dubuque has defeated three ranked opponents, including third-ranked Nick Simmons, 6-4 on Feb. 12. He will bring a 6-2 record into the championship, including a 5-1 mark Big Ten dual matches.
Dubuque will be looking to become the first Hoosier since Roger Chandler in 1997 to claim a Big Ten Championship. Last season Dubuque finished third.
133- Redshirt Freshman Brian Dyer (Naperville, Ill.)
The 133-pound weight class will feature seven ranked wrestlers, including Mark Jayne (3rd, Illinois), Mack Reiter (fourth, Minnesota), Tom Clum (seventh, Wisconsin), Mario Galanakis (10th, Iowa), T.J. Enright (16th, Ohio State), Mark Moos (18th, Michigan) and Bryan Heller (19th, Penn State).
In his first year as a starter, redshirt freshman Brian Dyer has gone 16-16, including a 3-5 mark in Big Ten duals. Dyer has defeated Dan Quintela of Northwestern, 6-3, Ryan Froese of Michigan State, 3-2 and Sean Schmaltz of Purdue, 4-2.
This will be Dyer's first time competing at the Big Ten Championship.
On Tuesday, Feb. 22 the 141 and 149 pound weight classes will be previewed.
