Hoosiers Fall to Badgers, 18-16

Bloomington, Ind. - Despite redshirt freshman heavyweight Dave Herman's first career Big Ten dual win over Lee Kramer, 8-3, the 20th-ranked Indiana wrestling team fell to 13th-ranked Wisconsin, 18-16, Sunday afternoon at University Gym. With the loss, the Hoosiers fall to 14-3 overall and 2-2 in Big Ten competition.
Needing a fall to lead IU to victory, Herman jumped on Kramer early to take a 2-0 lead with 2:40 left in the first period. After a Kramer escape, the match headed into the second period with Herman leading 2-1.
At the 1:32 mark of the second period, Herman brought the Hoosier fans to their feet as he placed Kramer on his back to give him a 5-1 lead. Herman then turned Kramer onto his back but was only able to gain a two-point near fall. Each wrestler then exchanged escapes for the remainder of the match, as IU wasn't able to get the much-needed fall.
With the match starting at 125 pounds, Dubuque jumped out to a 6-2 first-period lead before scoring a 11-3 major decision over Collin Cudd to give IU an early 4-0 lead. Dubuque dominated the entire match, as he recorded over three and a half minutes of riding time. The win by Dubuque was his 16th straight, as he improved to 19-1 on the season.
Wisconsin tied the match up at four as redshirt freshman Brian Dyer fell to sixth-ranked Tom Clum, 12-4 at 133 pounds.
The Hoosiers regained the lead at 7-4 after senior Mike Simpson defeated Ed Gutnik, 6-5 at 141 pounds. With the score tied at four and Gutnik hold the riding time advantage of 1:28, Simpson scored the match-winning takedown with three seconds left.
The Badgers again took the lead at 9-7 as redshirt freshman Issac Knable fell to 16th-ranked Craig Henning via technical fall, 17-0 at 149 pounds.
Redshirt freshman Brandon Becker gave IU a much-needed win as he used a late three-point near fall to score a 6-2 upset decision over 10th-ranked Tyler Turner at 157 pounds.
Becker had an early chance to score as he took down Turner at the 1:05 mark in the first period. However, the referee ruled that Turner had escaped out of bounds before Becker was able to grab the other leg for the takedown.
After a scoreless first period, Becker scored the first point of the match as he recorded an escape at the 1:16 mark of the second period. Becker took a two-point lead, as he was awarded a point after Turner was called for an illegal move. Turner cut into Becker's lead at 2-1 as he was awarded a point after Becker was called for his second stall warning. With 39 seconds left and Becker leading 2-1, he was again called for another stall warning to tie the match at two.
With the match tied at two and the riding time point awarded to Becker, he was able to turn Turner onto his back to record a three-point near fall to give him a 5-2 lead as time expired.
Wisconsin took a two-point lead at 12-10 as Jake Donar defeated redshirt freshman Max Dean, 9-4 at 165 pounds. The match was close throughout, until Donar got a late takedown and a two-point near fall in the final 20 seconds.
IU received its second big win of the day as junior Brady Richardson defeated 16th-ranked Kelly Flaherty, 11-10 at 174 pounds.
Richardson jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with the match's first takedown at the 1:57 mark. After a Flaherty escape, the Badger took Richardson down to the mat and added a two-point near fall to give him a 5-2 lead.
With Flaherty deferring to the third period and Richardson choosing down, Flaherty was able to ride Richardson out the entire period to give him the riding-time point.
In the third period, Richardson recorded five takedowns, including the decisive takedown coming with 30 seconds left in the match to give IU a one-point lead at 13-12.
Wisconsin then claimed two straight matches, as junior Andy Rios fell to Brady Reinke, 11-5 at 184 pounds and Josh Buuck lost to 15th-ranked Ryan Flaherty, 15-8.
The Hoosiers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 12 as they host to 17th-ranked Michigan State at 2 p.m. in University Gym.
