Herman, A First year Success
2/9/2005 12:00:00 AM | Wrestling
Bloomington, Ind. - Backup freshman heavyweight Dave Herman is 23-7 on the year with a team-leading seven pins entering this weekend's duals against 12th-ranked Michigan State and third-ranked Illinois. The redshirt freshman defeated Lee Kramer of Wisconsin, 8-3, to claim his first career Big Ten dual win. He took home a third place finish at the Eastern Michigan Open on Nov. 6 in Ypsilanti, Mich., and an eighth place finish at the Mat Town Invitational on Nov. 27 in Lock Haven, Pa. His 23 wins are good for second on the team.
More impressive than his record, the Fort Wayne, Ind., native did not start wrestling until he arrived at Indiana. He made the team after competing in an open tryout.
Herman sat down and talked about his decision to start wrestling and how his first season has gone.
On why he decided to try out:
DH: "Some of my friends were going to try out for the team, so I thought I would give it a shot. In high school, I would go with my friends to watch them wrestle in tournaments and just got interested in the sport. When I got to Indiana, I decided to try it."
On his performance:
DH: "I think I am doing pretty well. I feel that I still need to get better in a lot of areas, but I am becoming more comfortable. My technique is what I need to work on the most because right now, I really don't have any."
On his strengths:
DH: "I try to use my size and strength to make up for my lack of experience when I am wrestling. "
On how senior Pat DeGain has helped his improvement:
DH: "Pat has helped me a lot this year. When I wrestle him, I need to do my best or he is going to beat me. I have to give it my all every time."
On the coaching staff:
DH: "They have done a good job of pushing me to get better. They stay on top of me and make sure I don't get behind."
On winning his first career Big Ten dual match against Lee Kramer of Wisconsin:
DH: "It felt good. I knew I could beat Kramer. Pat did a great job of preparing me for him."
On why he did not wrestle in high school:
DH: "In high school, I ran cross country and that was the extent of my athletic career. Because I graduated high school two years early and did not have a junior or senior year, I wasn't able to wrestle for my high school team."
