V8+ Wins at Clemson (03-19-05)

CLEMSON, S.C. - The Indiana University women's rowing contingent raced to victory in the initial Varsity 8+ contest of the spring season at the Solid Orange Clemson Challenge regatta on March 19. Additionally, IU placed second and sixth in the second Varsity 8+ race and fourth in the Novice 8+ contest.
"Overall, we did well," Indiana head coach Steve Peterson said. "I am happy with our performance. Throughout our preparation, we knew that Clemson was the big challenge in that they had raced a couple of times this spring already. All in all, it was a great training trip for us."
Highlighting the Cream and Crimson's efforts was the Varsity 8+ shell as the crew of sophomore Betsy Hibbard (cox), senior Amanda Walker (stroke), junior Lauren Anderson, senior Kelly Schuiling, junior Ashley Airis, junior Laura Lazaridis, sophomore Stacey Young, sophomore Rozzie McHenry and sophomore Dana Powell (bow) blazed to a commanding 6:53.00 performance to claim the event crown for the Hoosiers. Indiana rolled on to the win after opening a four-seat lead at the 500m mark. By the 1,000m mark, IU had pushed out to an open-water lead and sprinted to the finish with nearly a 10-second conquest of Clemson's second-place time of 7:02.3.
"A lot of things played into our Varsity 8+ crew winning," Peterson said. "They definitely gained confidence throughout the week of practice. The critical thing for us was a good start. It was clean. We just wanted to make sure we didn't give up ground early. After we did that, we pulled away with a great pace the rest of the race."
The second Varsity 8+ crew of sophomore Raechelle Medellin (cox), sophomore Meredith Hanschu (stroke), junior Carly Schilling, sophomore Courtney Valerious, sophomore Lanie Deppe, senior Mary Bell, junior Elisabeth Benoit, sophomore Colleen Ryan and sophomore Laure Stebbins (bow) finished in second with a 7:11.6 behind Clemson's first-place time of 6:59.6. Meanwhile, IU's third Varsity 8+ contingent of sophomore Richelle Medellin (cox), junior Erin Kuehn (stroke), senior Steph Weert, senior Annie Lawson, senior Ashley Quinn, freshman Jordan Britt, freshman Sarah Deuser, junior Jessica Hillsley and senior Kristen Storer (bow) placed sixth in the same event with a 7:31.0.
In the Novice 8+, the team of freshman Laura Tuteral (cox), freshman Teresa Snider (stroke), sophomore Krista Brown, freshman Alyse Bruszewski, freshman Casey Keating, freshman Ashley McClure, freshman Juliana Koons, junior Megan DeCamilla and freshman Amanda Mitchell (bow) picked up fourth place for the Hoosiers in a time of 7:32.9.
Next up, the Indiana rowing squad heads to the nation's capitol, Washington D.C., for a tilt against Georgetown and North Carolina on March 26.
