BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana rowing squad heads to the nation's capitol, Washington, D.C., for a race against Georgetown and North Carolina on March 26.
VARSITY 8 LINEUP
Sophomore Betsy Hibbard (cox), senior Amanda Walker (stroke), junior Lauren Anderson, senior Kelly Schuiling, junior Ashley Airis, junior Laura Lazaridis, sophomore Stacey Young, sophomore Rozzie McHenry and sophomore Dana Powell (bow).

Sophomore Raechelle Medellin (cox), sophomore Meredith Hanschu (stroke), junior Carly Schilling, sophomore Courtney Valerious, sophomore Lanie Deppe, senior Mary Bell, junior Elisabeth Benoit, sophomore Colleen Ryan and sophomore Laura Stebbins (bow).

QUOTING COACH PETERSON
On the upcoming race:
"This weekend's race will be another good test for all of our crews. Much like last weekend, both Georgetown and North Carolina are good crews and should be respected and should pose a good challenge for us. If we are executing our race plan and rowing well, we should win. If we don't, we can lose. Just like last week, this should provide us with a good opportunity to learn more as a crew and prepare us better for the harder races coming up when we face off against the other Big Ten programs."
On Varsity 8+ earning Big Ten Boat of the Week honors:
"I think earning the Big Ten Boat of the Week honor is a sign that the team is improving, and gaining respect in a very competitive conference. It is a real testament to the determination and hard work that all of the members of the team have put in, and the belief that if they work hard enough, they can win. The Varsity 8+, in particular, has embraced this attitude and this week it really showed. They haven't put any preconceived limits on what they can or cannot do, and each time they go out there and race as smart and as hard as they can.
"A key belief for this crew is 'Don't be afraid to fail', which means every time they go out for practice or a race, they give it their all without any reservations, or excuses and see how fast they can go. Each time they try to make it from start to finish as fast as they can, and hopefully that will be fast enough to beat whoever happens to be on the line next to them. Whether we win or lose, the goal is the same for the next time.......go faster."
BIG TEN BOAT OF THE WEEK
The Indiana University women's rowing squad made history as the Big Ten Conference tabbed the Varsity 8+ shell as the Boat of the Week on March 22. The accolade is the first such honor in the program's five-year existence, and came after a first-place finish in the Varsity 8+ race at the Solid Orange Clemson Challenge in Clemson, S.C.
Highlighting the Cream and Crimson's efforts over the weekend was the Varsity 8+ shell as the crew of sophomore Betsy Hibbard (cox), senior Amanda Walker (stroke), junior Lauren Anderson, senior Kelly Schuiling, junior Ashley Airis, junior Laura Lazaridis, sophomore Stacey Young, sophomore Rozzie McHenry and sophomore Dana Powell (bow) blazed to a commanding 6:53.00 performance to claim the event crown for the Hoosiers. Indiana rolled on to the win after opening a four-seat lead at the 500m mark. By the 1,000m mark, IU had pushed out to an open-water lead and sprinted to the finish with nearly a 10-second conquest of Clemson's second-place time of 7:02.3.
FALL SIGNEES
Indiana rowing head coach Steve Peterson has announced the signings of five student-athletes for the 2005-06 season. Hannah Elsy (Twickenham, England), Ashley Johnson (Alpharetta, Ga.), Valerie Mercer (Jacksonville, Fla.), Emily Clarke (Bloomington, Ind.), and coxswain Bridgett Bartholomew (Marina Del Ray. Calif.), have all committed to continue their rowing careers at Indiana.

The Indiana rowing squad heads to Cincinnati, Ohio for a regatta against Cincinnati, Dayton, Eastern Michigan and Louisville on April 2.
