WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Indiana University women's rowing squad rode the momentum of last weekend's incredible performance at the Solid Orange Clemson Challenge to overcome inclement weather and a host of other crews trying to dash its early season triumphs in Washington, D.C. The Varsity 8+ shell set the school standard for best start to a season by running its record to 7-0 on the young season, while the Varsity 4+ crew claimed a head-to-head conquest in its initial race of the year.
"It was a great set of races for our team to learn from," Indiana head coach Steve Peterson said. "The conditions here were rough and the currents were not great. Since we are blessed with a smooth course like Lake Lemon, our team is not used to dealing with these types of waters. It posed a challenge for us, but will be a learning experience to build on. The Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ had good outings, while the second Varsity 8+ did not handle the conditions well."
Highlighting the Cream and Crimson's performances was the Varsity 8+ shell as the crew of sophomore Betsy Hibbard (cox), senior Amanda Walker (stroke), junior Lauren Anderson, senior Kelly Schuiling, junior Ashley Airis, junior Laura Lazaridis, sophomore Stacey Young, sophomore Rozzie McHenry and sophomore Dana Powell (bow) broke the school record for best start to a season, set last year with a 6-0 opening, by besting George Washington, Georgetown and North Carolina in the big race.
In the race, IU experienced its first floating start of the season and demonstrated it was not used to that style of race as the V8+ crew fell behind in the initial 500. The Hoosiers, however, battled back to even the race with George Washington by the second 500. Both crews traded the lead with each stroke throughout the next 1,000, but the Cream and Crimson was able to out-sprint GW to win the event in the last three-to-five strokes with a 5:54.7 clocking
"I am happy that the Varsity 8+ won," Peterson said. "We let George Washington back into the race after we jumped ahead of them. We just need to work on putting teams away. Right at the middle of the race, GW attacked and made it a race at the end. Our kids just buckled down and rowed to the win."
In the only head-to-head battle of the day, the Varsity 4+ contingent of sophomore Richelle Medellin (cox), junior Erin Kuehn (stroke), senior Stephanie Weert, senior Annie Lawson and senior Ashley Quinn (bow) recorded a time of 7:32.7 to beat George Washington (7:38.9) to the line and claim its first victory of the season. The short boat started the race down over the first 750 due to a shaky start, but fought through a choppy course and some debris to pick up the triumph with an open-water win.
The second Varsity 8+ crew of sophomore Raechelle Medellin (cox), sophomore Meredith Hanschu (stroke), junior Carly Schilling, sophomore Courtney Valerious, sophomore Lanie Deppe, senior Mary Bell, junior Elisabeth Benoit, sophomore Colleen Ryan and sophomore Laura Stebbins (bow) finished in third with a 6:40.0, behind North Carolina (6:33.8) and George Washington (6:33.38), while beating Georgetown (6:50.0) to the finish line with a 6:40.0
In the Novice 8+, the shell of freshman Laura Tuteral (cox), freshman Teresa Snider (stroke), freshman Alison Beasley, freshman Alyse Bruszewski, freshman Casey Keating, freshman Ashley McClure, freshman Juliana Koons, junior Megan DeCamilla and freshman Amanda Mitchell (bow) placed fourth behind George Washington (6:27.0), Georgetown (6:47.1) and North Carolina (6:51.7) with a time of 6:59.3.
Next up, the Indiana rowing squad heads to Cincinnati, Ohio for a regatta against Cincinnati, Dayton, Eastern Michigan and Louisville on April 2.
