IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Indiana University wrestling team stands in fourth place with 52.0 points after the first session of competition at the 2005 Big Ten Championships in the Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa. Illinois is in first place with 56.5 points, while Minnesota is in second with 55.0 and Michigan in third with 54.0. The Hoosiers advanced five wrestlers into the second-session championship finals, while four moved on to the consolation bracket.
The Cream and Crimson opened the first session in fine fashion as junior Joe Dubuque put together a 7-4 decision over No. 6-seed Adam Smith of Penn State, who downed Ohio State's Nathan Costello, 8-6, to advanced to the match with Dubuque. Dubuque improved to 22-2 with the victory.
In the 141-pound class, senior Michael Simpson outlasted No. 5-seed Alex Tsirtsis of Iowa in front of his home crowd to the tune of a 3-1 decision. With the triumph, Simpson improved to 25-7 overall and set up a bout with top-seeded Josh Churella of Michigan, who blanked Wisconsin's Ed Gutnik, 3-0, in his earlier match.
Meanwhile in the 149-pound weight class, sophomore Isaac Knable scored a 7-4 upset decision over No. 7-seed Stephen Wolery of Ohio State to advance to a dual with No. 2-seed Ty Eustice of Iowa. Unfortunately, Knable could not withstand Eustice as he fell 21-7 in a major decision to drop to the consolation bracket.
In the 157-pound division, redshirt freshman Brandon Becker rolled through No. 4-seed Nathan Galloway of Penn State with a fall at 6:18 in the match. After improving to 26-9 this season, Becker moved into a confrontation with top-seeded Ryan Bertin of Michigan. Earlier, Bertin scored a 19-4 technical fall at 5:56 over Purdue's Colton Salazar.
In the 165-pound class, redshirt freshman Max Dean improved to 21-11 after a dominant 12-3 decision over Ohio State's Keegan Mueller. The triumph moved Dean into a battle with No. 3-seed Matt Nagel of Minnesota. Unfortunately for Dean, Nagel was too much as the Gopher notched a 10-2 major decision to drop Dean into the consolation heat against Northwestern's Greg Hagel.
Junior Brady Richardson countered the disappointment by moving on in the 174-pound class with an 11-7 decision over No. 4-seed Nick Roy of Michigan. Previously, Roy upended Purdue's Dan Bedoy, 7-2, in an earlier bout. Richardson's 21st win of the season set up a match against top-seeded Pete Friedl of Illinois, who recorded a 10-6 decision against Penn State's James Yonushonis.
In the 184-pound class, junior Andy Rios moved to 24-15 on the season with a 6-3 decision over Michigan's Joshua Weitzel, before falling to No. 1-seed Brian Glynn of Illinois, 6-2. Rios will face the victor of the Alex Picazo (OSU) and Paul Bradley (Iowa) match in the consolation bracket.
In the 197-pound class, sophomore Josh Buuck sustained Indiana's only first-round loss after falling to No. 8-seed Matt Koz of Minnesota by major decision, 13-5. Buuck dropped to 19-14 on the season and will face Wisconsin's Ryan Flaherty in the consolation bracket.
In the heavyweight division, senior Pat DeGain improved to 29-4 this season with a thrilling 2-1 triumph over No. 6-seed Kirk Nail of Ohio State to advance into a battle with No. 2-seed Greg Wagner of Michigan. Earlier, Wagner scored a sudden victory decision, 7-5, over No. 7-seed Mike Behnke of Illinois, while DeGain also decisioned Purdue's Jake O'Brien, 5-3.
Saturday's second session begins at 6 p.m. CDT at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
