THE BASICS
The Indiana track and field team will head out West to take part in the Pepsi Relays in Eugene, Ore., on Saturday, April 9. The quadrangular meet will pit the Hoosiers against Oregon, Missouri and Washington in a scored event. The meet is scheduled to begin at noon.
RECAP OF INDIANA RELAYS (WOMEN)
The Indiana women's track and field team wrapped up action at the second annual Indiana Relays by taking a third-place finish with 110 points. Central Michigan finished first with 140 and Army came in second with 129 points.
Senior Ara Towns rebounded from several injuries during the indoor season to finish first in the 100m dash with a time of 12.05. Also capturing a first place finish was sophomore Stacey Clausing in the 200m. Clausing barely missed the regional qualifying standard (23.96) after she crossed the finish line at 23.97.
Freshman Zakiya Robinson made her outdoor debut with a second-place finish in the long jump. She reached a mark of 5.54m (18-02.25). Sophomore Lorian Price was right on her heels, as she leaped a 5.48m (17-11.75, which put her in third overall. In addition, Price was also runner-up in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.64.
In addition, junior Larra Overton also turned in a personal-best time, shaving 16 seconds off her previous personal best to capture the crown in the 1500m run with a time of 4:30.06. The women's 800m saw senior LaDonna Ray take second at 2:16.76, and freshman Nikki Peterson finish third at 2:17.32
CLAUSING HONORED BY BIG TEN
Indiana sprinter Stacey Clausing was awarded Big Ten Co-Athlete of the Week for the period ending April 4. Clausing earned the first weekly conference honor of her career after posting two first-place finishes at the Indiana Relays over the weekend. The St. Mary's, Ohio, native shares the award with Liz Roehrig of Minnesota.
In the second annual Indiana Relays, the sophomore finished almost two seconds faster than the runner-up in the 400m with a regional qualifying time of 54.58, and just missed a second qualifying standard in the 200m, clocking in at 23.97.
Clausing is the first female Hoosier to earn Athlete of the Week since the 2002-03 season when Danielle Carruthers was recognized on April 19, 2003.
NCAA MIDEAST REGIONALS COME TO BLOOMINGTON
Indiana University's E.C. "Billy" Hayes Track at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex will host the 2005 NCAA Mideast Track and Field Championships on May 27-28.
The NCAA Mideast Regionals, which have only been in effect for two years, come to Bloomington after being held at LSU in Baton Rouge, La., in 2004 and Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio, in 2003.
