BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Former Indiana All-American Pat Noonan was selected as a Major League Soccer All-Star for the second time in his career. Noonan, a member of the New England Revolution, was named as a reserve forward for the 2005 Sierra Mist MLS All-Star Game after earning a reserve spot in 2004 as well. The all-star game is scheduled for July 30 at Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. The match is slated for 2:30 p.m. CT and will be televised live on ABC. Tickets for the game are available by visiting MLSnet.com.
The format for the 2005 all-star affair will pit the 18 MLS stars against Fulham FC of the Barclay's English Premier League. Fulham includes U.S. National Team players and former MLS stars Carlos Bocanegra and Brian McBride, both of whom are slated to participate in the match. The format will be similar to that of the 2003 and 2002 All-Star games. In 2003, the MLS All-Stars battled CD Guadalajara. The year prior, the MLS stars battled the U.S. National Team.
The 2004 Budweiser Scoring Champion was one of seven bench players selected on Thursday along with forward and fellow Revolution teammate Taylor Twellman, goalkeeper Scott Garlick (FC Dallas), midfielder Simo Valakari (FC Dallas), defender Chris Albright (Los Angeles Galaxy), defender Frankie Hejduk (Columbus Crew) and midfielder Christian Gomez (D.C. United). Five of the seven reserves were selected by all-star head coach Colin Clarke of FC Dallas, while the other two were commissioner choices from MLS brass Don Garber. Noonan was a coach's choice, while Twellman and Gomez were the picks by the commissioner.
The 11 players selected as starters were named on Wednesday and include: goalkeeper Matt Reis (New England Revolution); defenders Greg Vanney (FC Dallas), Eddie Pope (Real Salt Lake) and Jimmy Conrad (Kansas City Wizards); midfielders Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy), Clint Dempsey (New England Revolution), Ronnie O'Brien (FC Dallas), Amado Guevara (MetroStars) and Shalrie Joseph (New England Revolution); and forwards Carlos Ruiz (FC Dallas) and Eddie Johnson (FC Dallas).
FC Dallas and the Revolution are the two most represented teams. The Texas club has six players, including four starters, while the squad from New England has five representatives and three starters.
Noonan holds a share of the MLS lead in goals with eight on the season and is tied for fourth with 17 points. The Revolution is second in the Eastern Conference with 32 points (9-2-5), trailing the Chicago Fire, who have 35 points (11-6-2). Noonan's time with New England has been limited somewhat this season. He has played in 13 matches, missing time while playing for the U.S. National Team.
The nomination as a reserve to the all-star for Noonan marks the 14th such selection for a Hoosier. Brian Maisonneuve was the first Hoosier to be selected to the MLS All-Star Game in 1999. Maisonneuve, Chad Deering, Mike Clark and Chris Klein were each selected two times for the all-star game, while Juergen Sommer earned his lone trip in 2002. Dema Kovalenko has the most all-star nods of any former Hoosier with three. He was selected in 2001, 2002 and 2004.
