BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana wrestling signees Angel Escobedo and Matt Coughlin were named to the 20th-annual Asics All-America Wrestling First Team, announced June 6.
Escobedo is a four-time state champion, a 2002 FILA Cadet Freestyle Champion and a two-time Junior National Championships finalist. He ranks as the top wrestler at the 135-pound weight. He compiled a 223-1 overall record with 156 pins and is projected to be in the 141/149-pound class at the collegiate level.
Coughlin is the nation's top-ranked prep at 152 pounds. He is a two-time state champion and two-time state runner up. Coughlin recorded a 178-4 career mark with 125 career pins. He also snared the 2004 160-pound Junior National title and the 2005 152-pound High School Senior National crown. Coughlin is projected to compete in the 157/165-pound weight class at Indiana. Additionally, he claimed nine national titles as a prep.
The Asics All-America Team, selected by a nationwide panel of wrestling experts, is the only national all-star team for which wrestlers completing all four high-school grades are eligible. Asics is a title sponsor of the Asics Vaughan USA Wrestling Fargo Junior National Championships and is a major benefactor of the sport at all levels.
Members of the first team, as well as the Asics Wrestler of the Year, will be honored prior to the finals of the Asics Tiger Junior National Freestyle Championships July 30 at Fargo, N.D.
The Asics All-America Team includes eight wrestlers at each of the 14 high school weight classes - the first, second and third teams and five honorable mention selections. Wrestlers are considered at the weight class at which they competed in their state tournament or the National Prep Championships this year.
The 14 first team members combined to post 35 state high school or National Prep championships, along with nine Junior National and 11 Cadet National titles. The second and third teams are not far behind. The second team boasts 32 state titles, including three four-time champions, to go with five Junior National titles and two Cadet National titles. The third team boasts 25 combined titles - including two four-time champions - along with eight Cadet National and two Junior National crowns.
