Hoosiers Head to Circle City for Counsilman Classic

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana swimming will be represented at the 2005 FINIS Counsilman Classic in Indianapolis, Ind. The three-day swimming showcase will be held at the IU Natatorium from June 10-12 and will feature incredible swimmers like six-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps and five-time Olympic medal winner Natalie Coughlin.
Indiana head coach Ray Looze will send the contingent of Sarah Bugden, Alec Haley, Lee Houchin, Matt Jensen, Mike Jones, John Kevin Koehler, Todd Patrick, Kevin Swander, Scott Tanner and Leila Vaziri to the only USA Swimming Grand Prix event held outside of California.
In its second edition, the Counsilman Classic is named in honor of legendary Indiana University coach James 'Doc' Counsilman, who authored a run of six consecutive NCAA National Championships (1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, and 1973). Counsilman took the sport of swimming to new levels with research and contributions that are still used by today's athletes. He led the Hoosiers to 23 Big Ten Championships, including 20 straight titles. His overall record was an astounding 285-41. In his 33-year tenure, Counsilman coached 29 individual national champions in 49 events and 10 national relay champions. His tenure also saw 177 Big Ten individual championships and more than 400 All-Americans pass through the halls of Indiana University. Doc also coached in the 1964 and 1976 Olympic games where he coached 48 medalists (17 gold, 18 silver, 13 bronze) and five Olympic gold medal-winning relay teams. His teams never placed lower than sixth in the Big Ten Conference.
